A instructor is a good idea (actually, a REALLY good idea). Breaking in the engine should be done aswell. Dead sticks are not AS relaxing with the avistar as with a lt-40, or some other more "traditional" trainer. I have had a bunch of deadsticks right after takeoff with mine (old OS 46 fx ), but never any damage from those. The only damage was when I was taxiing without the wing for practice, flipped it over, and broke the tail.... There was also that deadstick before I knew how to land (I didn't tell the instructor I was landing).
