Default EFlite Safe Mode - Adjusting Gain

I thought I was onto something and after some additional research on the internet, I have become totally confused. Hopefully somebody can set me straight!

I have a 1.5m Turbo Timber and a DX6 G3 Tx. I have enabled Safe Select and assigned it to a 2 position switch. So far I have only flown with Safe mode enabled, but I have been playing with AS3X mode on RF 8. I initially wanted to add Expo when I switched to AS3X mode, as my stick inputs were grossly exaggerated coming from Safe mode flying, but since I have dual rates (70/100) already setup and assigned to a different switch than my Safe Select, it appears that I would have to enable Expo for both modes.

Here is where I am confused. I watched a video that showed that by adjusting the servo travel for GER channel, I could decrease the Safe mode gain. So I started thinking, maybe as I progress in flying, I could decrease the Safe mode gain on the Tx until I no longer needed to rely on it? So rather than explore the Expo setup on my Tx, I decided to look more into that. That's when I became overwhelmed with information in regards to adjusting the gains on the receiver and not on the Tx?

So I guess my question is, similar to other EFlite Safe mode planes which have Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced modes on a 3 position switch (it appears the Turbo Timber does not have this option) can I simply adjust the servo travel and accomplish the same thing or is that way outdated and adjusting gains via the app on the receiver the correct way to accomplish this?

Thanks and sorry for babbling

Brian
