Covering with Monokote

Just wanted to offer a word of encouragement. I've seen a lot of posts on this forum and the kit-building forum complaining about how difficult it is to cover with Monokote. I am building my first kit (GP .60 size Cub). After hearing bad things about Monokote, I wasn't sure if I should use it, but decided it wouldn't be around for 30 years if it didn't work.
I am now part way through and it is turning out pretty well for a 1st job. I did three things that I think were helpful.
1. I bought a good iron. I spent the extra 10 bucks and got one with a good thermostat on the handle.
2. I printed and followed Mike Buzzeo's (MinnFlyer) instructions and followed them closely. THanks, Mike. The instructions in the Monokote roll are actually pretty good as well.
3. I took my time! I probably took an hour to do my first elevator half, including one tear-off. After I got the hang of it, it went a lot quicker.
Fellow beginners, don't be afraid to build and cover a plane for the first time. It's really a lot of fun and leaves you with a great sense of accomplishment.

It's on this website, in the "magazine" section under "how-to." Try this link http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/a...?article_id=67

Glad you found the Article helpful!
Yep, it's not hard, but it IS time consuming, and you DO need to be careful.
Here's another great tip...
Wives/Girlfriends won't admit it, but most of them are DYING to get their hands on that "Cute Little Iron"!
If you play your cards right (I.E. do the covering in their presence, and act like you have 5 thumbs) they just might "pity" you, and offer their assistance.
Many of them are GREAT at covering! (must be an Estrogen thing)

I seem to have better luck with UltraCote. Not sure why, but I seem to be able to get the bubbles out easier and it sticks to the surface better. Maybe it is just me, or possibly the temp that I set my iron on. Will have to recheck my process.
