Default Almost busted at LHS

I think I need some counseling or something. I need another plane like I need another hole in my head. I went to the LHS today with some money in my pocket and almost started WWIII at "Cruzomatic" residence. I was strongly looking at the WM T-34, Sig LT-40 and Avistar. (I like trainers) I was also eyeing the magnum 54. I debated, debated and then debated. The cell phone goes, 'ring, ring, ring, wife on other line,,,She says,,,'where are you'. Uhhh,,,at the store. You're not at the hobby shop are you??? Uhh, no honey. She says, "honey, DON'T BUY ANOTHER PLANE." I got scared, mad and then scared some more. I quickly bought a gallon of fuel and bolted for the door before I did the unthinkable. Geezzzzz, that was close. I need help,,,,,

Welcome to the sickness we call RC. There is a thread titled "you might be addicted if......." that was interesting.

I set a goal to keep the planes/kits to under 2 dozen. That didn't work. I set it again at 3 dozen. That didn't work either. I have set new goals! I just haven't decided what they should be so there have been no rules broken.

Hey Cruz. Ya gotta keep em scattered out so thay can't all be seen at the same time.
Like some in the house, a couple in the storage, maybe the garage, at work etc.
A trailer helps too...

Of course I never have more than one or two

You have to finish every plane in the same exact color scheme! That way, she'll think you only have one!
...but then, the P-51 will sure look funny in a U-CAN-DO paint job!

I have a trick that I use when I get a new plane. I have a friend that deals in RC stuff he has lots of good things. I always tell my wife that I traded some of my stuff for some of his stuff. She never knows how many planes that I go thru. I sell some and trade some so that I can always get some more. So far it has worked pretty good. Just keep the money somewhere safe and spend it wisely.

May I suggest the following:

"Gee honey, you're right. I do have too many airplanes. Maybe it's time I sold them and took up a new hobby.... maybe judging lap dances?"

I can see one of two outcomes... either models become a non-issue, or you hear from her attorney

Good Luck!!

Geez I feel for you guys, my wife MAKES me get a new plane/engine/radio once in awhile.
Even when I have a whole room dedicated to storing them, and all the "supplies" and I can fly one a day for a week with chance left over, she says, "honey, are you loosing interest, you haven't bought a plane, or been to the hobby shop in awhile?"
I know, some guys have all the luck.....my life is SOOOO hard.

At least your wife doesn't call the hobby shop before she tries your cell phone.

Hey crusomatic,

Perhaps when she called, you should have said. "No honey, I am not at the Hobby Shop, I am at the Jewelry Store." :-).

Of course, it all depends on YOUR wife, and your budget. I know of some wives that can't be bribed, I know of some that don't care, and I know of some that no matter how much she is "bribed" she won't hear of it. In other words, it's like apples and oranges, you can't compare your wife to someone elses--but you already knew that. I am really lucky that I have one that isn't any of these. If we have the extra money, it's okay with her. If we don't have the extra money, I wouldn't buy one, but she would be miffed if I did. I know a fellow flier that works his ass off so she can have a big house, top of the line Ford SUV, plenty of jewlery, nice clothes, and anything else her heart desires. But, if he even mentions buying an airplane she gets mad and won't talk to him for days. If he does have an airplane, she doesn't want him to go fly--ever. He has turned to buying planes behind her back and hidding them at the shop. But, he never gets to go fly, so there isn't much point in having them--IMO. He keeps hoping she will change, but he hasn't figured it out in two years so we're still waiting.

I am not sure there is any moral to the story, or any solution to your situation. You could get another job, but then when could you fly? I hate to see husbands hide things from their wives, but, I also hate to see wives pressure husbands to the point they feel the need to hide things from them. Best wishes in finding a happy medium and getting a new airplane. fyi--I have been married for 25+ years, to the same wife! .

I hear ya. You must know my wife as she is just about what you descibed, not quite like your buddies, but similar. For the most part she doesn't support my flying hobby. We have a new son (19 month old) and she now says my hobby should be him. I only work on my planes late night when he's in bed, not wanting to take time from him. I do fly on the weekends though and try to fly once a week as I have a 4 day work week. I also enjoy the accordion, woodworking, running and lifting weights. She says, "I have too many hobbies". Our marriage is kinda funny though, having once filed for divorce and such, just never went through with it. We have a ton of differences, a lot of them are control issues I think. We can go out to dinner and treat her family when they're in town, spend 80.00+ on dinner, then go shopping with her mother spend another 150.00+, just bough a new cell phone 100.00+ and spends here and there. If I spend, 129.00(plane), 80.00 (engine) and 85.00(flight pack) I'm in the wrong. I'm a saver, she's a spender, go figure. No way I'm working two jobs.

Women seem to get weird after having children for some reason. I think it is difficult for them to deal with the hormonal changes. She has a point about your son being your new hobby. But it sounds like you are also aware of the importance of being with your son, by building after bedtime. It is tough when wives think that the husbands job is to make money and the wifes job is to spend it. Since she likes to spend, maybe you should send (oops, I meant ASK) HER to go to the hobby shop :-). Some men find that if they do something for their wife (watch the kid while they go out with the girls, buy them something nice, or just be espeically nice to them, like cook dinner) it helps them feel like the husband deserves something too. Other wives just take more advantage!

The control thing can be especially tough. It would be very hard to get her to believe that it is her idea you go flying and buying. If it were me, I would give up the acordian and running :-), but then I am lazy and like rock-n-roll :-). I would sit down with her and explain how important flying is to you, and that you don't mean to take anything away from her by doing it. Apparently, you make enough money to pay the bills and still support both of your hobbies, so that shouldn't be a problem. Like I said, some women are more compasionate if they feel their needs are being taken care of, and are more likely to give in to the spouses desires. Others just get more demanding. I hope yours is the former. It would be unfortunate (especially, since you have a child now) to feel the need check the expiration date on the divorce papers. I hope you can work it out!

It does appear hopeful since she still calls you "honey". If she called you a less affectionate name like "You F^@#!^& B@$+@&+, there may be another solution that would be a better option

Marriage is working at it I guess. Give up running and the accordion, nah, can't do that. Christmas is coming up, maybe I'll get her an airplane.

Thanks for listening guys, I appreciate it.

I understand about not giving up the running. I have a friend that had to give up running and really misses it. My cousin has been running for years he is now 54 and is two inches shorter than he was a few years ago. The doctor said it was from all the running.

It may work getting her a plane. I can't even get mine to go to the field with me very often. I did get my wife to partake in my previous hobby (fishing) but then she didn't want me to go by myself and leave her with the kids [] I tried taking the kids, but then all I did was help them, and didn't get to fish myself. [:@]

You could do like I did with my wife and fishing. I bought "her" a really good rod and reel, and then "I" got to fish with it :-). However, the repercussions of crashing "her" plane may be disasterious. It is tough to win no matter which way you go. Hang in there! :-)

Geez guys, don't feel bad, I have over 55 planes, and got 2 Nosen Mustangs last week and a 27.5 % Edge 540 yesterday. It is a sickness, but I don't want to be healed. I am working on 3 planes right now, a scratch Long EZ, a kitbashed twin and a 12 foot glider, but have to move them all to the back burner when the Edge goes on the bench.

Man, what a fun hobby.

I have suspected for some time now that there is an additive in our nitro methane fuel that has properties similar to the addictive effects of "Crack Cocaine". I now think I have enough evidence to write a proposal for a federal grant to study this phenomena!
