Default Monocote & Ultracote?

What's the difference betwen Monocote and Ultracote? Which one is easier to work with for a first time coverer? Which one is more protective/stronger?

Monokote probably comes in more color choices but I like Ultracote better. Ultracote seems to be more durable, but a tad more expensive too. I have planes with both. I can't comment on ease of application as I haven't covered a whole plane yet with either.

I highly recommend Ultracote for first time users. It's much easier to work with.

Annother vote for Ultracoat. It is easyer to work with. It also sticks down easier. And works around curves and over edges better. I think that Monocote is more puncture resistant and slightly stronger. But give me Ultracote every time.

I've covered with both, I like the Ultracoat better for ease of use. I like its shrinking characterics better for sure!

I agree completely. Ultracoat sticks and shrinks with less heat than does Monocote. This makes Ultracoat easier to work with. This disadvantage of Ultracoat is that is does not hold up over time quite as well as Monocote. But even so, I favor Ultracoat. Most of my planes don't last that long anyway.

Well...here's a vote for Monokote.

I've used both, and prefer not to have to re-shrink my planes every time they set in the CA sun for a few.

My Ultracote ones end up looking like dried prunes, and the Monokote ones stay nice and tight!

You simply have to use/try both and then make your own decision.

Thanks! What about weight; which one is lighter? I'd kinda lean towards Monocote b/c it's tougher and won't wrinkle in the sun on a summer day. I think I'd feel better knowing that the Monocote is stronger so I wouldn't have to worry about putting a hole in the wing when I pick it up; just a comfort thing.

No way Jose!!

Almost impossible unless your plane is 100 lbs and your fingers are needles.

I use both and my experience in the Texas sun is that monocote needs restretching more than ultra cote, don't know which last the longest, the oldest material I have is around a dozen years or so and they are about the same,my choice is ultracote, but both will do a great job.

For the first time user, I'd pick Ultrakote. It goes on with less heat, and is easier to stretch around wingtips and corners. It doesn't bubble as much when placed over another layer. And it's plenty strong, I doubt you'd poke a hole in it by handling the airplane. Monocote does come in more colors though. They are both very good, just a little different to work with.

OK, thanks! Then, because it is going to be my first covering job, I'll go with Ultracote. I'll be covering a P-51D Mustang, and I want to use a chrome covering; does Ultracote have a chrome or just a silver?

My free advice is if you don't have a lot of covering experience in covering,it's because I've used chrome a couple times,is to go the silver. The chrome was a bear around corners and with a little to much heat the chrome will discolor [:-]
