hi there could someone help me and tell me how i get a picture on the left hand side of threads

The picture you are referring to is called an Avatar.

Click on "Settings" in the gold bar near the top of this page, and scroll down. You will see a line that says "My Avatar".

Choose either "Upload Custom Avatar" And "Choose Stock Avatar".

If you want to upload your own, it must be no larger than 85 x 85 pixels, and file size no larger than 7k.

Click on the Settings box in the upper right corner of the screen. Once in settings look for "My Avitar"
