I've built and covered a gp piper cub. When it was time to install the rudder I realized in horror that the elevator prevents the rudder from fitting flush with the vertical fin! I have at least 1/2 inch gap on bottom of rudder. That small piece of horizontal wire that connects both halves of the elevator prevents the rudder form fitting properly, how do you guys handle this?

I just browsed through the manual (for the 40 size kit). It is not clear on what to do.
My gut response is that you should cut a slot in the rudder so that the metal rod can move freely, and the rudder slots over (bridges) the rod. The closes I can come to an answer is the picture on page 31 of the manual above step 12. See how there is a hollow in the rudder to lety the rod fit?

you have to notch the rudder for the elevator joiner if that's what you're talking about. DO NOT glue your rudder on with a 1/2" gap. Fix it however you have to.

Mike - do you have a drawing showing what to do if the joiner is behind the hinge line? That half-moon sort of cut-out that's needed. Sounds like that's what he needs.

Yep... the second one is easiest.
Want to do some art for my website? I only need about 200 drawings. The pay is great if you think "thanks" is good pay.

If I cold be reallly picky... the first picture is not a solution because the elevators already have the torque rod in them, and trying to thread an elevator through that intsy bitsy hole .... well, it is like santa down the chimney, just won;t happen ;-)
