Welcome! Your first priority is to locate a local flying club and seek out experienced pilots locally. You will need a safe and insured place to fly your plane, i.e., read club here. You will probably also need some help learning how to fly. This is especially true since you indicate your plane may have some damage. While you can get a lot of help from this forum, it is often hard to determine damage from photos. It would be much better if an experienced pilot could actually look at your plane and help you with any required repairs.
As for the battery, I assume you are talking about the RX battery. Most often these are plugged into a switch harness, and you charge thru a wire attached to the switch. The swithc will often have three wire bundles. One for the battery, one for charging, and one that is operated by the switch that goes to the RX. If in doubt, you can always remove the battery and charge it directly. However, most will suggest replacing NiCd batteries after 3 years. You may wish to find someone locally with a battery cycler that can test your battery since it has sat for so long.
Cheers.
