Then again, I am in Canada, and things certainly seem to be different in the big TX ...

Join one of those clubs that is convenient to you. Check them out. Don't just join the closest one. Once you join, you will most likely be required to fly with an instructor for a bit. At least until you solo, and can prove that you can operate/fly the aircraft safely enough to land, take off, fly a pattern and perform basic manuevers including a deadstick landing. Don't let any of this scare you. It's easy enough to learn, and will surely save your bacon when need it. You'll be glad you did.

I live in Sugar Land also and have been flying for a couple of months. In the area there are 2 fields. Scobee which is west of 6 on Westheimer its a county field and you can fly there with out being a member but must have AMA. The club there is the Bayou City RC. I've tried to get lessons there but unfortunately the instructor would never show. Got there early and waited for over an hour. Did that a couple of times and samething everytime so I don't know if you'll have better luck. The other one is at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds and the Fort Bend Flyers is the club same set up you can fly there with out being a member but you gotta have AMA. Haven't been able to get in touch with those guys as their site is down and haven't been able to get a phone number. The RC hobby shop over on Hwy 59 usually have flyers for the local clubs but last time I was in they didn't have any. http://www.bcflyers.com/sys-tmpl/door/

actually if your 15 AMA is cheaper for you. I believe the membership only is just a dollar. If you want the magazine its a little more but beats paying $58 for it.

I'd suggest going to the local fields and asking questions... join the club that seems to have people willing to answer your questions... you can also try emailing the club instructor and seeing if he/she can meet you at the field one day to answer your questions. I stopped by the field on Westheimer last year when I was in Richmond visiting my sister... they've got a nice set-up.
Don't give up too soon...it really is a fun hobby with a lot of good people!
