Lets see. From doing a search in the past for best 2nd plane, I will summarize what I have read.
In no particular order:

It depends on what you want, high-wing, low-wing. For a high wing plane just about any 40 size stick makes a nice second plane and most stick arf's in the 40 size are in that price range or just a tad more. For a low wing I would go with the G.P. Super Sportster as a first choice, they are a great flying plane with the rates turned down and can be bashed a little after your done with what it will do and turned into a pretty nice acrobat when your ready, and the price is right in your range. Do a search and you will find a gozillion suggestions. You could always save a bit more and put yourself into a little pricier range and have even more choices. Don't make the mistake I did and go beyond your skills just because the plane looks cool. My second plane was a G.P. Super Decathlon, BIG MISTAKE, I never got that plane off the ground untill I bought and flew at least four other planes. I will say it was fun to build and sure did look pretty but not a second plane so don't jump into something on looks alone, pick a couple you like and ask in here what people think of them and then decide.

Ditto on all those remarks, the WM super sports is a great plane, I would say a quarter of my flying buddies fly them. Another quarter fly the Raider Mach II (the low wing version) which is cheap, easy to build and extremely stable. Both under $100.

For about $150 the Midwest Aerobat is outstanding!

I'll have to say a Four star 40 is a good plane, but sort of limited. My second plane was a Four Star 60 and it flew/flys great. The 4*40 doesn't have dual aileron servos which will allow Flapperons which allow to be used as flaps (both down), spoilerons (both up) or use as elevator-flap functions. A stick type of plane is good as long as you keep the CG forward and not a lot of throw. I would even go as far as to say a U-Can-Do 3D 46 is a good second plane because it will fly slow and has a large wing. The plane doesn't have to be used for 3D. The throws should be kept to a minimum and the CG be positioned as close to the recommended area as possible and as your skills improves the plane will be able to grow with you, so you will save money also. The U-CAN-DO actually flys rather good. Just be sure that you learn how to handle a low wing, tail dragger. Tail draggers are easier to land IMO and having flapperons really allows you to be creative with your flying. But take small steps and allow your skills to grow and the planes will grow with you.

Right at $130. is the World Models T-34. Comes complete with usuable hardware, is semi-semetrical low wing with a slight dihydral and a nose wheel. This plane will fly slow or fast docile or aerobatic. It has an excellent wing, is durable and repairable, uses a .46 engine......
This is the consumate second plane.

To start with I would say make sure that it is a low wing. Low wings handle the wind much better than any high wing and for the most part have a wider speed range. Some great second planes as mentioned above are the Carl Goldberg Tiger 2, the Sig Four Star 40, and the WM T34. The T34 is hard to beat for the price/performance. The 4* is the easiet of the ones mention to fly but not by a lot. After a few flights on any of the others you will relax and begin to have fun!

I have had the WM Super Sportster with a .46FX on the front, it was fast. I had to dial it WAY down to fly it decent for my second plane. It was probably too fast. I have the Ultra Stick 60 now and that is nice and slow and docile, great plane. I have also built a Venture 60 (updated, better looking 4* 60) and it flies great also.
WM Super Sportster would be good, but make sure you are quick on the sticks for the first few flights, it's quite a bit faster than your trainer.

NOVAflier, nothing wrong with the WM Super Sports either. I think uses the same wing as the T34 but is just made to have a military look. I also really like the Rambler 40. It has an incrdible speed range and is very aerobatic but its almost rwice the price of the other ones! ![8D]

GP Big Stik 40 size, you're going to love it, I fly mine no matter how much or how little wind. You can do almost everything with it.

I'm sure any of the above would work fine and to add my 2 cents, the GP Easy Sport would be a good second plane. I have an OS 46 FX in mine.

Great 2nd plane. maybe even more than the 4*40. Flys like a trainer, but definately not a trainer.
