Well I went back and re read my post. I thought I must have had a typo when you suggested I go back and read my post but that wasn't so. I don't have anything to add or retract. It's pretty simple really. If a plane will maintain it's altitude in a verticle position, it will hover. If it can't do this, it can't hover.
zetor, I agree with your original post exactly as you stated it. That is what I was getting at when I said a hover and unlimited vertical are two different things. Sorry for the confusion. My response was really more focused towards what DBCherry said that you agreed with. What he was stating didn't exactly go along with what you originally stated - the two being separate.

Sometimes the thoughts running through my head don't translate quite right when my fingertips bang them out. Didn't mean to sound as if I was disagreeing with your original statement. In my opinion you got it exactly right.

Answer: Yes!!! I started trying different things on my own after I passed my wings test. I found out that I was able to hang my LT40 on the prop at about 3/4 throttle and then start climbing at full throttle. This was with an FX 40 engine with a MAS 10-5 prop! It should be even easier with an 46FX.
Wow, sounds like your .40 is doing even better than my .46! I'm running an 11x7 with a .46 and I'm almost at full throttle... Makes me wonder what a slightly lower pitch prop would do for me... Could let the engine spin a little higher into the RPM range where these two strokes really make their power. Just be careful with that low pitch prop that you don't damage your engine. If you do a full power dive the prop will be unloaded and it would really let it spin like mad. The long term effects on the engine may not be very good if it is pushed past the upper limits of the engines RPM range.

Regardless of ability to hover an LT-40, I would go with a 50 sized OS, Irvine, or Magnum etc. As stated above, this is a big plane and the extra power comes in handy during that period leading up to plane 2 and if you go ahead and get the bigger engine it will be much more versitile when it comes time to put it in another plane. I have the LT-40 and I started with a 46LA (far less power than a FX) which is just enough to fly the plane. I also have an assortment of 50 sized engines and if I were starting over again I would skip the 46 size and go toward the more versitile 50s. More power = more fun later on. Ability to hover anything = many hours of practice + a few crashes.

I got up to 15-20 seconds on my LA 46..11-6/Avistar, This is
a High level hover, before it fell out.. I may have gone alittle
longer if I didn't make the wrong"first stick" move right at the
end.. The old timers that was at the field kept telling me, Hey
that plane is not suppose to do that:-)

In Reply to Wings,

No Big deal wings, if you want to use a screw driver to drive in nails ,that is up to you, I stick with my original answer, the plane is not designed for such things , It is a trainer designed for that purpose .

By the way, Im sure that it makes a difference that you HAD an LT 40 ,, at least it does to me !

This thread is funny. First one guy says he wouldn't go so far as to say that it would hang and then a few posts later, he is willing to wager it will saying he has done it. Another guy with a herculean OS .40 says he did it at 3/4 throttle. I guess a .40 la would rip the firewall out.
Another guy thinks he is educating me with posts of 10,000 words, the difference between unlimited verticle and a hover. He goes on to warn about over reving a 40 with a 10X5 on a trainer in full power dives.

Funny you should mention that! The prop hanging was quite fun and I have had the plane pointing straight up at a standstill or turning either direction. It never occoured to me to point the plane down in a dive!! I would have been more concerned about the rubber bands on the wing popping off rather than the engine overreving! BTW, I trained my kid and some 2 of his friends on the LT before I sold it. Now I wished that I kept it and made it into a twin!

How much do you want to wager?

I hand it practically hanging on the prop 30 foot in the air? On purpose? No. But it did.

I wager ya.

Never said I done it. I said it was REAL close. Sound like a democrat putting a spin on everything.

And I usually use a screw drive for screws and a hammer for nails.

My post was based on personal experience. Yes the LT 40 is HUGE. But size is not what determines if it can hang on the prop. It is WEIGHT and engine thrust.

I seen it right in front of me. No need to argue. Its just annoying when some says in his opinion it is impossible when I seen with my own eyes that it PRACTICALLY did it with a 46. It will hang on the prop with anything larger.

Nope, a screw driver isn't designed to hammer in a nail. But does that mean you cant hammer in a nail with a screw driver?
