Heli engine in plane?

I have a Thunder Tiger 50sx-h ringed helicopter engine.
Would this be OK to put in a 40 size trainer?
E.g:
-Is the ringed heli engine somehow not suited to be in a plane as oposed to an ABC engine?
-RPM / weight problem?
-Is the shaft on a heli engine shorter so it won't support the propeler?
Would this be OK to put in a 40 size trainer?

H Jo,
Looking in the OS web site ,I found a O.S. 50 SXH . Never have seen a Thunder Tiger SXH . This is a very powerful motor ,and would fly your 40 sixe plane very well. It is a little heavier then the standard O.S.40-LA ,and as such -it would probably require a little weight in the tail, but I think moving the reciever battery further back would balance the plane fine. Looking at the picture of the motor ,prop shaft looks long enough. The only thing I noticed was ,I din't see a muffler. . Might be a problem. Maybe some one else knows what size muffler you would need ? Good Luck, Amelia

I have the standard engine muffler, so it's not a problem.
My concern was just that it seem to be a "rule" that airplane engines are of the ABC type and helicopter engines are ringed.
Why that is I don't understand?

Jo,
The standard K & B engines of the 70.s are ringed engines. Most thunder Tiger engines are ringed. The ABC ,is a good engine ,but when its wore out,you have to replace piston & cylinder.
The ringed engine just requires honing the Cyl,and repacing the ring. All the O.S. FX series are ringed engines. The O.S. LA series are cheaper ABC types. My general thoughts have been --the ABC are throw away motors. Run them till they start loosing power ,then buy another one. You can buy two O.S.46 LA motors for the price of one O.S.46 AX.

Isn't it so that OS-46 FX/AX are ABC, so is the LA, but it's cheaper, bushed and do not have ball bearing.
And that the typical helicopter engine such as the 50 SX-H is ringed...

Hi T,
Yup--your right .The smaller O.S. 40,46,&61 FX were non -ringed,but the O.S.91 FX ,which makes almost 4 hp,is a ringed motor, and they are all listed as Sport flyers .
I have seen several flyers at the field using Heli motores on their models, and they seemed to work fine. The one thing I noticed was --the heli motors had a lot more power. If you were building from scratch,I doubt if I would spend the extra money for a Heli motor, but if you already have one--I would use it ..

Guys,
A heli engine has nothing to do with its internals, it has to do with the externals.
The airflow in a heli is different so the cooling fins are shaped different to take advantage of it.
Will a heli engine work on a plane?
If in a cowl you are probably looking at overheating.
If completely exposed you will probably be OK.
I suggest talking to tech support at the manufacturer.

I believe that heli engines have a higher output ... go look at the TT website KW. Most of the time the carb has a larger bore.

Besides the big head looks silly and slightly more weight it will work just fine. I've run both an Webra 28 and OS 32 heli engines in planes with zero issues.

The reason I brought this question up is because I have no experience with ringed engines.
I used to build and fly airplanes, all with OS ABC engines. 40FX, 46FX and a mvvs .21
Now I have this helicopter with a TT-50 ringed engine and I'd like to run it in a plane instead. (Heli is to much fuzz)
Do you guys know any good websites on how to break in and run a ringed engine?
Anything in particular I should think of?

Hi Test,
Why don't you try the engine forum. Last time I looked ,there had been 357,715 posts .I am pretty sure if you go there ,you will find what your looking for. My break in procedure ,I run the motor on a break-in mount clamped to my picnic table. Normaly I will run three --12 OZ. tanks of fuel through it at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle with the occasional full throttle slighty rich. I never run it at a fixed throttle setting for more then 25/35 seconds. In the box (If you still have it)are excelent instructions on Prop size, fuel nitro/oil content. If you don't have the box-try meccoa eng site. www.modelengine.com or the thunder tiger wrb site. Good Luck--
