Hi all,
I have been looking at the Mag 52 2 stroke engine.. I like the
price... And I heard fairly good reviews on Mag engines.. But
one of our club members has this very engine, and has nothing
but trouble with it.. It idles good, hi speed is good but the
transition Fast or slow throttle up usually ends with it dying..
Now this member is a good engine man.. He has adjusted all
to where it'll seem like it's ok, but as soon as he sets it on the
blacktop and starts to move the throttle it dies.. This was a
brand new engine, and broken in per instructions "plus".. He has
also tried new cans of fuel and different plugs with the same
results?? I told him to send it back, But he keeps saying he
will get it...
Anyway, Any others that has had problems/tips with this engine?
Thanks for any help/tips

Mine had a siphoning problem. Fixed that and have nothing but "praise" for this engine. It seems that it needs a little tuning to get it right. Mine was WAY too rich when I got it. After setting the needles, it runs great. Idles low and steady, transitions nicely, and has gobs of power.
Try the pinch test to check your settings. I would bet you are still a little rich on the low speed setting.

Hey Aeronaut,
His seems to spit alot of fuel out.., On one outing, he just kept leaning out
the idle setting but really to no avail.. It just seemed like the plug kept
loading up and anytime he throttled up it would die.. or spudder out until
it died.. He did check his tank inners and height which looked fine..
I still think I'm going to get one... Hard to beat the price, Well that is if it'll
run:-) I'm just trying to get real-life experiences from people that has this
engine..
Thanks for your reply

They do have a good reputation. I have an older 40 that I did not really like. It just never performed the way I felt it should. It did run well and was very reliable. The new ones are said to be quite good. I would not be arfraid to buy one. I have been looking at the 90 for a while myself. Go ahead I think you will be fine.

PS: I believe that Horizon is the service facility for them. They have a fantasic rep as well.

Had the same problem with my 52 last week.
Start the engine, get it ready to fly and then "wiggle" the needle valve, the engine may change speed. The O-ring on the needle valve if leaking if it does.

Most of the problems with Magnum carbs seems to come from the O-ring on the needle valve.
If it's new it shouldn't pop up as problem for a while at least. I've had good luck with Magnum engines. I have a 52 4 stroke that is going into a Fokker D-7. One of our club members flys an OS 52 4s as well as a Mag 52 4s. He claims there is nothing to choose between them. I used a .46 in an LT40 and it was very reliable. I'm also considering the .52 for another airplane. Go for it.

I have a .52. I HAD it in a plane under a cowl and I couldn't describe to you what it used to do. Every day was different. Screw low idle in, then out, then no transition, then wouldn't start, then something else. I hated it. I bought a CG extreme 330 profile, and thought I'd try the .52 on that. WOW, what a difference. Runs perfect, plenty of power, unlimited verticle. The muffler fell apart, but I got a pitts for it and it's back in business. So it was either sitting in the wrong direction on the other plane, cause I have a new engine in it and it runs great, or it was the cowl.
I do have a friend who has a .46 and it sucks. I don't like to pass judgement on engines when I don't know how they were broken in or treated up until the point that I see them, because I don't know. I'm just saying this one was either treated badly, or was crap from the beginning. Horrible transition.
Seen a few Magnum 4 strokes that run great.

Thanks for all the replies..
I'm still thinking about the Mag 52, The club member still has some problems
with his.. But I guess you can find that in all engines..
I hope the Mag 4s's run good:-) I have a .91 4s that I still need to break in..
I have also been thinking instead of the Mag 52, Maybe a Tower 61.. But
still thinking.. Again thanks for the replies..
Have a Great Day all!!
