I have been flying all summer with my tower trainer 40, I feel comfortable with takeoffs and landings and have done some aerobatics with it. The 40LA that is on it is starting to seem underpowered for it. I think I just want more power. I have a 46fx and was wondering if this will be to much motor for this plane? And also what prop to use with the fx on this plane?
Thanks

Same as Campy, the FX will be OK with an 11x6 APC. I have an Irvine .46 MkIII on my trainer with this prop and have no problems at all.

No problem, use the FX. There will be no problems. The prop reccomendations are right on the money. Good luck with it.

you will love the engine. just set it and forget it. it takes the "MDS" element out of flying. (having to worry about your engine instead of the plane

I'm flying the Sig LT-40 which is significantly larger (900 sq in) than the Tower Trainer (627 sq in). The vast majority of posts on Usenet suggested a .46 sized engine so I went with the Thunder Tiger .46 Pro and an 11-5 prop.
I have absolutely NO regrets and highly recommend this combo. The model (kit built) balanced perfectly with the slightly heavier BB motor.

A 10x7 prop is too small for the 46. You will most likely over rev the engine AND not get the performance out of it either. Both APC and MAS props have their place. The APC prop is a lot more efficient than the MAS due to blade design and because the APC prop does not "flex" as much as the MAS.

When you are really good try an Irvine .53, but watch out! I did it on a spare trainer and it can very easily rip the wings off. Try not to push past 1/2 to 3/4 throttle but use full on vertical climbs

The 46FX will be a nice change for you. Don't go smaller than a 11" prop. It will makes lots of noise and not give you the benefit of the larger engine. I tried lots of different props on trainers with 46 engines and found the best choice seems to be a MAS 11-5. It will give you lots of pull to get you out of trouble if you need to and will act as a brake for easy landings. It will also give the trainer respectable speed for cruising. You won't be sorry. I'm running a OS .46 AX (fx is not made any more I think) with a 11x6 MAS prop. Members at the field have said that the OS .46 might
be a little too much for a trainer but I don't think so. Actually, my Arrow is 1/2 trainer and 1/2 aerobatic in that the wing is semi symmetrical. I was flying at about 1/2 throttle. Full throttle and the plane is a rocket that you can shoot up straight verticle.
Its nice to know the power is there when you need it.

Most flyers fly off grass fields. I had a 40FX engine on my LT40 which was ok. I taught some new flyers with 46FX engines on the nose and the extra power really helps to get the big trainer off the ground when the grass is getting tall.
