Hey Guys,
I have a SE with a OS 40 FX which seems to do ok for the plane. It flys well, it just seems a little under powered. Anyways, I have an opportunity to sell my .40 with my Avistar to a buddy to get him started so I was looking at my options of engines to drop in my SE. I wanted to stick with a two stroke engine with lots of power. Any good suggestions?? Thanks.

Go for the OS50SX or if you have a little more cash why not a ROSSI 45/53 for power. Also, the TT46 is a standard engine that has enough power and is reliable. Bang fot the buck I'd go for the TT46. Everyone uses it so it can't be wrong.

I like the K&B .61 in my .40 size planes. Cheap, light and although it's kind of anemic for a .61, it's a kickin' .40! My SST .40 (shown in my avitar) gets unlimited vertical, and jumps off the ground if I'm not careful to let it take a more realistic takeoff roll.

I can highly recommend the following: OS 46 FX/AX, Thunder Tiger Pro 46, Evolution 46. They are all USER FRIENDLY, powerfull, engines that 99.9% or the time run great right out of the box. Some other engines you may want to consider are: GMS 47 and Irvine 53.

I am using a new Evolution .46 NT. Can't say enough good things about it. It has a lot more power compared to either the OS .46 FX or TT Pro .46 that used to be on the same plane. Extremely easy to start, good low idle speeds, and reliable running right out of the box. It doesn't get any better than this.

For the SE, mine had an OS 50 on it, performed great...but not as good as the one I saw with an Irvine 53, and not even close to the saito .72 powered one at my club. All are on the pricey side of the range, but are good performers in that plane.

Campy has a lot of good suggestions. I will add MVVS 49, Super tiger 50 and the Enya 50. All good runners and plenty powerful. The MVVS with a tuned muffler is Exceptionally powerful. Good luck with whichever engine you get.

Well I don't think OS, Irvine, and Rossi are in the "best bang for the buck" category. I think the OS 50 is outrageously priced for what it is. I vote for the TT .46 pro

Best bang for the buck two stroke would have to be the Thunder Tiger 46 PRO. But if it's power you want, especially for aerobatics, you can't beat a decent four stroke.
Propped right, a four stroke will outperform any two stroke in vertical performance. Maybe a Saito 56?

Come on DB he wants a 2C!!! Hahaaaa ... but seriously nothing like a Saito 72 huh?
Mark - I hope to get a NVVS soon with the tuned pipe ... hear its awesome! Just that I wanna get rid of my SC46 and TT46 first!

Tianci The tuned muffler is just dandy. Quieter than the pipe. No set up problems, less weight and just about the same performance as a pipe. I would highly reccomend one. I have one on a 40. Really works fantastic. Good luck with your engine.

the os 50sx ringed shares the same crankcase as the .40. the difference between a .40 and a .46 is actually a very big one, and the distance between a 40 and a 50 is a lot. the 50 ringed is a great engine and i would highly reccomend it. same engine as the 40 fx, just a ringed piston and tons more power. you will definatly have unlimited vertical.

Mark - aaaaaah ... the tuned muffler is good stuff too huh? I heard its very quiet. I shall look into that.
Spaceman - I've seen the 50SX turn a 12x6! Pretty impressive.

Yup, real good stuff, trust me
. I love mine. People have been blown away with how much power it makes. And with 10% nitro to boot. I live above 3500 ft, so it does not bother the engine. At a lower altitude 5% would be just fine. The engines (unless they changed them in the last year or so) are actually designed to run on FAI (0% nitro) fuel. They are powerful, but run so on low nitro fuel. Something to consider with the price of nitro. Good luck with whichever engine you get.

BTW: MVVS engines are built like a tank. Very robust to say the least. They will take a good lickin and keep on tickin.

I would rate the 50 sx engine toward the bottom in comparing value-WAY overpriced. The Irvine is a much better engine. This thread pretty much sums it up:http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_17...tm.htm#1785194
The OS 50SX - 160.00 at tower
The Irvine 53- 125.00 at the hobby barn

You guys are all great. Thanks for all your different inputs. I'll let you all know what I go with. I must say that the 50 SX is looking real good. Thanks again.

Redbirdy and Eagle both make a good point. I have a SE to build (someday) and have an Irvine 53 to power it. I like Irvines too. I saw a lot of people reccomending one for this plane. So I got one. I am not dissapointed with the engine.

BTW the 50 SX is a nice engine as well. If you really like it (and it appers you do) go ahead and get one. The final decision is yours. Buy what you like, The SX will work fine for you.
