Default Electric fuel pump

My Hobbico electric fuel pump failed after just two bottles of fuel. Is there a reliable and reasonably fast electric fuel pump that I can get ? Thanks for the inputs.............

I quit my electric pump and went with a 6 shooter. It's about as fast and I can attach it to my fuel can without having to mess with hooking it up to my power panel.

I've always had good luck with Royal pumps. I'm with Tex though. I use a hand pump and like it fine. I know how many cranks it takes to fill the tank and consequently always know how much fuel is left by counting the cranks to refill.

I have had three hobbico pumps. The first two failed after about 6 bottles. My last one has been going for almost 2 years. I probably have 6 cases or 24 gallons of fuel through it.

I would recommend that you get a good manual pump and just go with the electric pumps until they expire.

Default electric fuel pump problem

I use a fuel filter to the inlet of the fuel pump. I went to using the filter after the pump got a piece of plastic in the gear from a new fuel tank. I wonder if there is some material in the fuel pumps that "failed"???

Default Electric fuel pump

Hello Rajul

I have a Slimline Boxxer pump and like it a lot. I have been using it for about a year now, but only use it for 10% glow for my smaller planes. I use Slimline hand crank pumps for 5%,25% glow and one for gas. I have tried many electric pumps before I settle on the Slimline stuff.

Thanks Stomper, at last I am in contact with a boxxer user ! I have seen from another forum that although the boxxer is reliable, the pumping speed is "slow". Since you have been using a variety of pumps, could you kindly comment on how fast the boxxer is compared to other electrical pumps. Thanks again...........

Go for the hand pump. Its cheaper and more reliable. Its better than electric. Also, gives you a good hand exercise .

Hi Doug, is there any reason why you use the boxxer electric pump for your smaller planes (presumably with smaller tank) ? Is it because the pump is slow ? I have not found anybody comment on the boxxer pump speed compared to other electric pumps like Hobbico's. Will appreciate your comments............

Hey Rajul

as far as the speed of the boxxer, I don't think it is any slower then the others that I have tried. That said, I only use it on smaller planes ( fuel tanks). Now I fly planes that ues 5%, 10%, 25%, and gasoline. I can't see having four electric fuel pumps so I only use the electric on the 10% fuel and have found the hand pumps very easy to use. As I head to the 40% size planes, With there large tanks I may get a electric Purolator fuel pump. The Purolator pumps come in two speeds/models and sell for about $25.00 at any auto parts store. What size planes are you flying?

Note hand pumps in bottom pic.

I too am in the market for a new electric glow pump.

I've been using the Sonic-Tronics Mark X fuel pumps for years - lost two of them in the last couple of months. They both just quit pumping. The first one was several years old, but the new one quit after about two gallons.

I sent an email to Sonic-Tronics on 31 Jul asking if they would replace the new one under warranty, but they have not yet replied.

Just looked over the Slimline Boxxer - it looks good and has a maintenance kit available. If Sonic-Tronics doesn't answer soon, I guess I'll have my LHS order a Boxxer for me - he carries several brands, but not this one.

In the mean time, my MPI manual gas and glow pump is working great - don't need it for gas right now - stuck my Sig Extra 300XS ARF with FPE 2.4 45 feet up in the top of a tree on approach earlier this week - new wing kit on order! Now if I could just order some new eyeballs for better depth perception........

Hi Stomper, Thx for the pics. Before you get the purolator, I thought you might want to check out a pump I discovered at jetcat website. I also found the same miniature delrin pump at mcmasterscarr (see pic). Seems promising and may be a good alternative to boxxer.

BTW, even if you are using different % of nitro, I guess there is no need to have separate pumps. The minute amount of leftover fuel in the line should not effect the next nitro fuel you use. Or am I wrong ??

I live in North Carolina were the humidity is at 98% all summer long. If I was to open a jug of glow fuel every time to swap the pump, the fuel would be ruined by the alcohol absorbing the moisture from the open air. Happens all the time here, so I keep the jugs sealed tite.

The pump you are showing, is it for gasoline or glow fuel?
Do you have a part number for that pump or a web site?

Most of the time you can't use one for the other as a gas pumps rubber seals will not hold up to the alcohol in our glow fuel. The alcohol will attack the seals.

Thanks Stomper. I understand now. The pump is 12V and retails about $45. I am not sure if it can be used for gas but for nitro and jet fuel is OK I guess based on jetcatusa. Fast pump as I understand. Cheerio............

Hi rajul,

I've been using a Sonic-Tronics Mark X for at least 12 yrs. At one time it developed a leak but I took it apart and resealed it. Another time it stopped pumping and again I took it apart and the little blades that pumps the fuel were stuck to the drive removed cleaned an replaced and it has worked ever since.

Just went and took a look at the Jetcat pump and it can't be used with gasoline because of the open motor brushes! like you said glow is okay. Other then that, looks like a nice pump. Please, if you get one let be know how you make out with it.
Good luck

rajul, I have used the Hobbico pumps and found the failure mode to be a broken wire inside the case where it attaches to the motor. Remove the back, resolder the wire and put some RTV or silicone potting compound to eliminate the torqueing of the motor at the start and stop and thus end the wire fatigue problem. After 5 years of using the repaired one, I sprang for the new Slimline electric that fits on the plastic fuel can and I just love it. Gave the repaired pump away and its still ticking. The fuel that I use now comes in a metal jug and the Slimline wont fit so have to fill an old plastic jug to use. Fuel pump problems persist. ha.

Hi Dickj, good failure analysis !! Since you've used both Hobbico and boxxer, how would you compare the speed ? What are the other noticeable differences ? Thanks and cheers..........

rajul, I use the Slimline 2000 pump see link http://www.slimlineproducts.com/sl2000.asp

I use the black model that screws on the jug. I have pumped many gallons of fuel, I fly in AZ in the winter and WA in the summer so use it a lot. I knew the person who tested the prototype in AZ and was attracted to it then. When the owner of the Slimline gave a presentation on his new pump I purchased one at the local Hobbytown. I have never been sorry. I use a small 12 Volt battery about half the size of the flight box battery for powering the pump. It is virtually maintenance free so far. I like this pump better than the Hobbico as its more convenient to me. I dont use a control panel or flight box, just a tool box, radio box and fuel jug. My igniter is two drycell batteries on a Hobbico extension. ha. Your choice. Fix the old one you have and it will work great also.

I use a simple pump that is used for cars for the window (the one that sprays the soapy water on the windows)
they are cheap and last very long.

Slimline 2000 Electric Pump - Help! Contact Moderator | (Post No. 1)
Hi, I wonder if you can help with the setup (fuel line, fill nozzle etc) for Slimline 2000. Thanks. My email: [email protected]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the package there is NO Fill Nozzle included. On the pump, there is only one vent Fitting. How do I hook up the fuel line with the pump? What extra Fill Nozzle and or Intake or Fittings do I need? Please explain.

When I fuel my planes, I unplug the tubings from the carburator and hook it up with the fill nozzle from the pump. However, the Slimline 2000 only has a tubing which can be plug onto the vent fitting for transportation. Do I need to plug in a Fill Nozzle every time I fuel my plane? I cannot imagine how I can fule the plane using two plaine tubings (one from the tank and the other from the Slimline pump).

If I need to attach a Fill Nozzle to fuel the tank, where do I store it on the pump for transportation? There is no place to plug in a Fill Nozzle on the pump itself. What's a proper setup and what the idea behind this design by Slimline? I found it inconvenient.

Thanks for your feedback.
