Default Best Low Wing Trainer?

I re-entered RC a couple of years ago and have built and logged time on both a GP PT-40 and TF Elder 40 and have a Sig 1/5th J-3 Piper in progress. Happy with and love em all. Now it's low wing trainer time. Would sure like to get opinions and rationale for recommendations for same. Past RCU suggestions have been most helpful with my previous choices. Thanks

I would suggest the Goldberg Tiger 2 or the Tiger 60. Both are excellent low wing trainers.

I only have 4 flights on it, but the Sig Astro Hog is an excellent flyer. With the stock dihedral it is very stable, it's large and very forgiving and will land really slow. Mine is built as a tail dragger and the ground handling is great as well.

What cknaack said, and if you dont like them a 4 star from Sig is also a great choice. I would also say a Something Extra from Sig can also be a nice trainer if you keep the control throws to a minimum.

All the ones mentioned are excellent, another to give a serious look at is the Great Planes Rapture. It's very new and going directly at the throat of the CGM Tiger II and the Sig 4 Star, but unlike those two, this is brand new and uses the latest in building techniques. It's also designed to be an easy build.

I have just test flown the new Sky Raider Mach II ARF from World Models for a buddy. They make a high wing and a low wing version. Both are $69.99 list-probably not much discount. The Mach II, low wing plane is an excellent 2nd airplane.

-World makes a good ARF, in the first place.
-The Raider is fairly long and it tracks well on take off.
-It has a symmetrical airfoil and I did all the regular acro. Couldn't get it to flat spin, but it does all the non-3D stuff.
-Lands very nicely. It's light and has a light wing loading.
-Excellent hardware. The control horns are the threaded post type, not the usual white plastic.
-My buddy has a Thunder Tiger .42GP in his and it pulls it well. Not unlimited vertical, but not a dog. Very adequate engine. The plane would be great with a .46, but one isn't necessary.
-I used to recommend a 4*40 for a second plane, but I am going with the Raider now.

-You can't go wrong with a 4*40 or 60, if you do go that way.
-The Tiger 2 is also a great airplane.
-The Astro Hog is an old design, but flies extremely well. My buddy who has the Raider also has a Hog with a TT .61GP. He says you need a chain saw to hack away all the balsa you need to carve to build it.

As others have mentioned, the Sig 4* and the Tiger II are both very good. You may also want to look at World Models Rambler 30 and Rambler 45 (has retracts). Both are also excellent flying planes. I did my first knife edges with a Rambler 30 (the plane is also a floater with NO BAD habits).

Thanks all for your thoughts and time I do like to build my own planes and add features like tank hatches, antenna tubes, hinges, better tail wheel mounts and my own covering schemes for example. (ie I'm still a kit guy) though preformed LE's and TE's have also spoiled me for life. So it's probably the Rapture 40 or the consensus Sig 4 Star. Think I'll give the Rapture 40 a go. Love those GP instructions, intrigued by the new servo rail system mount and love their wing design and the way it builds. Will stay open to more thoughts, however as I work on the Sig 1/5th Cub. Great kit itsself BTW. Got a lot of help from RCU contributors with ideas for its build in progress. Best Mike, you do a great job moderating all this stuff!

What a knife edge with a Rambler? I had the 40 and I did not try it! The plane flies great and is good as a low wing trainer for sure.

Yep, you will need to feed in some down elevator to compensate for the dihedrahl though (or wind up doing your knife edge in a circle )

I had a 46 FX on mine with an APC 11x6 prop, 10% nitro. Long story, but it collided with the end of a steam roller and was totaled.
