It happens, especially with a new plane. Stay within your boundaries and you will get used to flying it. Crashes do happen. Some aren't your fault.

As they say, it's only money. The way I look at it, if I didnt blow it on this hobby, I would just blow it on another one. I like this one MUCH better!!

They are'nt made to last! I find if you have a few planes, they are like insurance, (You crash one, it's okay, you have more you can fly). But for me, I only have one, so it is nerve racking, because if I crash, I'm out for a while.

But being scared is all part of this hobby, it gets your adrenaline rushing! (Well that's how I see it)

I agree! Although it would be nice if you never crashed, I think it would almost get boring if that possibility wasn't there.

When I first started flying my 4* this spring I was literally shaking after each flight. That was pure adreneline and I am glad my nerves have calmed down since then.

However, my wing broke in two on my 4* Saturday and demolished the plane when it hit the ground. The wing broke due to a previous repair a few months ago.

After that flight, the same day, I was a nervous weck flying my space walker. Even though it wasn't pilot error, the fact that I just demolished a plane had my nerves on end, topped with the fact that I no longer had a back up plane..

But I think I am somewhat scared every flight. If I wasn't I would be a lot more daring.

I think after you demolish a plane for the first time, some of the scaryness goes away because you've been there done that. Thats just my opinoin from my experience.

Still scared, YUP! Only been flying for a total of 2 weeks, and got my official thumbs up for solo on fathers day, I can safely say that its very nerve wracking out there solo'ing, but its a good kind. If there was no "danger", what would the point be?

After my planes expiration date passes, I will be flying SPAD's on a regular basis

I'm about ready to fly my 2nd plane (First Kit i've ever built)[also my first taildragger]([also my first low wing]). So yes i am scared to death. I've had the plane sitting around for 3 years, and it'll be so sad if i crash it on it's maiden flight (probably likely). Hmm.. but that's the hobby eh? It's fun while it lasts

I ment no fear if you know you can safely land and take off your plane. Why not let someone you trust in your club maiden your plane. Trim it out. Then hand the TX off to you and stand close in case you want to hand back to him. That's what I'm probably doing with my next plane.

am i scared of crashing?? no. then i wouldnt fly. am i worried about it?? yes. Right now i have one plane in commision, 1 waiting to be finished building, and 1 awating a radio and engine, so if i do crash, i have backups. but right now my only flying plane is my funtana, and it has been my favorite so far, so it will be a sad day when she goes back to whence she came.
Guys at my field feel a breeze and stay on the ground. often times i am the only guy flying during the wind, i love flying in the wind. It hones your skills down very good. wind can be nerve racking when landing, but hey, i am having fun. It only makes you a better pilot. i just joined a new club (new to me) and i get complements from everyine on my flying, wind or not. being scared to fly is not an option for me.
A remember reading on RCU somewhere this quote,"Don't spend money you are not willing to lose." in other words. Don't spend $1000 and not be willing to lose it all. I have seen crashes where everything from the engine to the radio were destroyed, TOTAL loss. Most of my extra money goes into my planes, so if i lose one it will put a dent in the wallet, but hey, i am willing to lose it.

I think that is one of the biggest reason why simulators will never replace the real thing. The probability of crashing is part of the excitement of flying.

i get scared some times, mainly when you are takeing up a new plane and you take off, you have to adjust all the trims, but it is also so much fun.... unless you get a new kit about ten sec.s after takeoff....

I have been flying for just on 2 years now and had a very good instructor who is our clubs CFI . I had the shakes so bad that some times i would tell him to take the plane while i had a quick smoke. After 4 lessons on buddy box i was watching him fly his Morris the Knife and commented on how i would like to be able to fly like that. He responded by handing me his radio and said youll be ok. I was hovering after about 3 minutes and had a ball. I then proceeded to go for my bronze wings and directly after that my gold wings .I now teach other beginners and i fly all sorts of aerobatic and pattern type planes.I have had only 1 accident and that was entirely my own fault. You cant do a cuban eight flat out at 20 feet from the ground. The cost of the plane should not come into the equasion, do you drive a car,do you panic or get scared when you take it out for a spin?We all crash but if you learn by your mistakes it will make you a better flyer.Just tell yourself you can do this, and go for it.Have fun.Illusion..

A friend of mine said, if you didn't want to crash, you wouldn't fly.
I have spent countless hours building plastic kits that just sit on the shelves, but whats the point, sure its a good sense of achievement but noone will see it fly or do anything cool, it just sits.
I fly a Spacewalker now and it's my first own plane (I shared a Boomerang 40 with my dad) and every time I fly its I get sooooooooooooooo nervous its not funny, to the point where a couple of times it sits in the pits not getting flown at all. When I do fly it I get more and more confident every time I do. I flew it the other day (flight number 7) and I did 1/4 of a tank of circuits then starting doing some aerobatics which normally I won't be game enough to do in my Spacewalker. I fly it almost every weekend now, but mind you things always go wrong, like underarige falling out, deadsticks to end all deadstickness (5 out of 7 flight deadsticks aint bad I'm a pro now), pitts muffler constantly coming lose.

THE BEST WAY TO OVERCOME A FEAR IS TO CONFRONT IT and IF YOU'RE GOING TO PANICK, DO IT SLOWLY

My Fear is directly proportional to the time money and effort I put into the plane but the touch of fear brings on the adrenaline which is a damn fine buzz!

I mostly get nervous when people watch. I overcame most of my fear by building and designing my own cheap planes (foam) and using an ARF trainer instead of the nice home build kit.

Still I get nervous everytime.

I don't think it will ever stop, the only think that I can do to limit it is fly more often and think.... it's just money - even if I cannot afford new planes.

It's often an ego thing... you just don't want to come home with pieces, luckely my wife understands how hard flying can be (she's learning), she prefers to use a foamy herself.

Designing your own planes boosts your confidence as well, so you feel even better when flying.

You will crash your planes eventually. We know this happens going in. Accept it, fly them, crash them, and buy more. That's cycle of nature in this hobby.[8D]

The only thing I get scared of is if I crash I have to somehow get a new plane without pissing off the wife! That's hard. Everytime I order something she's like "when did you get that", or "how much did that cost?" OOOhhhh, I shudder thinking about those questions......

Solution is simple RoNeRic ... divorce the wife and get a pretty young thing ... then there is no more queries! Hahahaa ... seriously ... we all need to have some fear when we fly, if not then you have to be nuts or totally oblivious as to what can happen. I fly cheap planes and I fear a lot less. Owned some nice planes and I worry each time I start the landing approach.

Any time I take a new plane up for the first couple flights I get that adrenilne rush... I just flew a Kyosho Gee Bee for the first time last week and What a Rush... It's not the money I worry about just how good a job I did setting it up and antisapation of whats going to happen... By the way "Gee Bee flew great and greased the landings.. Love the plane... Beware of High grass... last time out high grass and wheel pants caught and did a 1 1/2 flip on touch down.. when the wheel pants grabed the grass...

I have many planes. 1/4 scale down to indoor electric fliers and everything in between. Most no fear, funplane is the coroplast Pizza box with a OS 25 FP. Third year for it. Too many straight in prangs to mention. Try 30 ft circles, with the wing tip 6 in. off the ground. Once in a while the wingtip will catch and cartwheel for 15 ft. Pick it up, if the prop isn't broke, fire it up and go again. By the way its still all original parts. A no fear fun plane. If you have your wings, anyone is capable of flying it.

Im bulding my first RC kit (only done smaller display-balsakits before). A few weeks untill its flight-ready, i think. And im beginning to get nervous for that crucial first flite (be honest, what are the odds for a crash on first flight? Bet its horrible odds, especially with no instructor ).

But since im learning alone, ive started intense RC simulator training, and are planning the big takeoff. I was thinking of starting VERY basic, Wright-brother style. First alot of taxiing around the strip, getting used to the speed of the plane, handle and making sure the engine runs reliable.

Then perpahs some acceleration, to see if it runs strait down the line..But no takeoff. Then, perhaps a light "jump" (a few seconds in the air), to get some seconds of flight to see how it flies, before touching down again. All in strait lines, no turns. Then perhaps a longer "jump". Practicing landings and takeoffs bigtime.

Then, once i feel comfident, get some altitude and do a 90 degree turn, and land again. Then a 180 degree turn, land, etc. Untill the plane is trimmed and flying nicely.

I hope that this way i can feel in controll, and ontop of the situation, which i guess is half the fear factor.

But like all planes, its gonna crash one day(and more). But the important thing is HOW it crashes. It you hit the ground nose-down at full speed, its gonna make a mess and its all over. But i hope most of the time crashes are fixable, some even on-field with some CA (like landing gear, bumps, loose wingtips or so). I guess smaller incidents are just something to get used to, so you dont fear it.

(btw, just watched a video of a big expensive Jet going strait down, burning in flames...When the pickup car came back with it, it looked just like a real airplane crash..burned-out black rubble with nothing left...saw the look on the pilots face....poor guy. Agree, if you cant afford to loose it, dont fly it)
