Default Radio Kits Help!

Im looking for a radio kit that comes with the RX TX and Servos. Just wondering if there is any websites that everyone recomends or places to look to purchase. Thanks! Cole

Most flyers check out a site called Tower Hobbies. The radios do come with batteries, charger, and servos. RC clubs have buddy boxes for training and its cheaper for you if you match the radio brand to the available buddy box. Our club uses Futaba and Airtronics. JR radio buddy boxes require its own battery pack which is a pain so I would look at the 2 other brands. Get at least a 4 channel or a 6 if you think you will be in the hobby for while. You will need 4 channels for starting out and the extra 2 channels can be used on other planes down the road. Don't try flying by yourself or the results will be very disappointing.

The places suggested by others here are very good. I STRONGLY suggest not trying to learn to fly by yourself. The average first flight of someone trying to teach themselves to fly is USUALLY LESS THAN 30 SECONDS and frequently results in damage to the plane/equipment. Clubs provide instructors at no charge.

A new 4 channel setup (transmitter, receiver, batteries and 4 servos) will run about $125 - $130 at Tower Hobbies. A HiTec Laser 6 setup will run about $150 and a Futaba 6EXA/6XAS about $190/$200.

BEFORE BUYING THE RADIO

Check at your local flying field and see what brand is being used by the MAJORITY of the people. Then get that brand or a compatible brand. Futaba, HiTec and Tower are compatible. JR and Airtronics are USUALLY proprietary for several things (Buddy Box is the main item), however that is changine. The reason for this is that while manuals are good, a live person with knowledge of your radio is much better.

Also find out what are the LEAST USED CHANNELS and get your radio on one of those channels. There is less chance of being accidently "shot down", plus it maximizes your flying time since you don't have to wait for the channel to clear.

Thanks guys for the input. I allready have a JR Quatro 4 Channel. But when I start to get multipule planes I hear that the computer radio storage of the trims for each plane makes it alot easyer. Im just trying to price and see what would be a good option. Reason I was asking for the TX, RX, Servos and Battaries is because if i can get that I would have a better radio system and the components for another plane so I can kinda kill two birds with one stone I guess. Maybe this is a bad Idea so I dont know. But since I have JR stuff now I better stick with it to make everything compatable. As for the club it seems that there is no one radio everyone uses. There are alot of JR, Futaba and Airtronics (and some of the others). But I dont know just thought I would ask. Give me some more thoughts Im allways open to suggestions.
Thanks
Cole

Oh one more thing is PCM worth the extra money or is FM just fine? I dont know to much about that I guess.

Since you already have a JR, I suggest staying with JR. That way the equipment you already have will be useable and the 4 channel you can use as a buddy box. JR makes some very nice computer radios. I would still check out the channels though, a couple of crystals now will be less expensive than a bunch of them later if you decide to change channels.

As for PCM: The BIG thing with PCM is the fail safe. You program the receiver so that the plane does a certain thing in case of loss of signal. This is frequently reducing the engine to idle, leveling the plane and haveing the plane fly in a circle.

IMHO, unless you are in an area that has a lot of interference or you have a several thousand dollar plane in the air, it isn't worth the money. In almost 4 years of flying (this time ) I have seen 2 planes get "hits" (interference) and one plane get accidently "shot down" when someone else on the same channel turned on their radio WITHOUT CHECKING THE FREQUENCY BOARD OR PUTING UP THEIR FREQUENCY FLAG FIRST. They did pay to replace the plane/damaged equipment. Personally, I have never taken a hit (that I am aware of) or been shot down (I am one of two people on my channel).

I agree with Campy. For general sport flyers PCM is an extravagance that isn't necessary. And of the people I know that fly with PCM, not one of them have programmed them to do anything other than kill throttle if they take a hit. Otherwise, the servos simply lock where they were.

I agree with Campy and Minn. No need for pcm at this level. I also suggest buying JR equipment. I hear the new 6102 is a nice radio at a good price. Just be sure when you order your new radio to order it on the same channel as your old set. You then can use all of the flight gear from that radio. You in essence get a free flight pack. And have a spare transmitter or a buddy box. Good luck with whatever you end up with.

Well Thanks everyone for your input. I think I will stay with JR and plan on staying on the same channel its channel 18 and so far I am the only one on it that we know of. As for the radio bit I guess 6 channel will probaly be good for me for a long time and maybe go with the use of the pcm in the future some time. Thanks guys/gals

I don't know what you are flying, but many radio packages come with standard servos and large receivers. If you are flying smaller planes, glow or electric, or sailplanes, you may not be able to use those big components. Standard servos have very little use in my planes, so I purchased my futaba 9C without the rest; charger and battery only.
