Default What type of plane is this?

Hello,

My Name is Drew. I recently made a 2nd hand purchase to begin my R/C Aircraft Hobby. It's a little older trainer. Now I'm trying to find out who manufactured the kit and what is the name. I have provided a few photos in the next few posts. I also have an ASP .46 engine on it and was curious as to it's quality since I can't seem to find a link to the ASP website and take it that they have gone belly up.

Thx for any help

Drew

It's an "Stick" of some kind... Also known as an Das Ugly, Super Stick, Ultra Stick, Big Stick, Sweet Stick -- I think you get the idea...

Drew:

Galen is correct about the Stick family, but it is a great 2nd plane,
not a first trainer. ASP were a good middle of the road engine
sold mainly thru Hobby Shack(?) in the 70's to mid 80's. These
were a bushing non ball-bearing engine. If the previous owner
used 18% oil fuel would give decent life span.

Looking closer at the engine photo, it looks new. (no black sludge
around the front bearing). Make sure as you stand behind the
plane, that the engine angles to the right slightly and from the
side view that it angles down 2 deg. to give downthrust as it flys.
The downthrust can be done by putting 1/16" thk. washers
under rear engine flange mounting holes.
My earlier post about not being a trainer could be wrong if the
surface movements are not at max. and you're a patient trainee.
Seek out a good pilot with a buddy box and this will save you a
lot of rebuilding time.
What kind of radio did you get with it?

Default GP Stick???

Drew,

It looks nearly identical to my Great Planes stick but mine does not have the decrotative elevator / ailerons.

I agree with rreiss that this plane could make a good trainer if the rates have not been set high. It looks like a fun plane!

Actually the instructor took it up on it's maiden flight while in my hands and was really amazed at how well it flew. I Even let a 13 year old club member who's been flying for a little over a year now try it and he compared it to his Tiger Trainer and enjoyed it just as much and had a few things he liked more about mine. He found the engine stability to be much better and found the controls really easy, he even landed it without even knowing about it much and he had just missed landing his earlier in the evening. It has a fairly big fuel tank on it as well. The instructor guessed the aicraft could last upwards of 25 minutes in the air if wanted. I didn't fly it because we didn't have the buddy cord for my Futaba 4Sport but I did try the 13 year old's plane high in the air with their airtronics radios. I was suppose to fly it possibly this weekend but the instructor probably couldn't get a hold of the person in the club with the Futaba patch cord and radio and it's suppose to rain tommorow. Too bad I'm going on a trip for a week. Now I have to wait until I come back on Monday the 5th. Oh well, all in good time.

BTW you might get a kick out of this but with all the problems we had with the other 2 aircraft flying that day, the kid's and the instructor's biplane, we totally forgot to check the CG and took off without ever checking it. It should have been ok considering it was built by an experienced r/c pilot a while back and I bought it second hand but hey you never know. Anyways she took off like a bat out of hell and works great. The biggest problem I think would be that the engine may be a little too big for me to start off with and will take a little getting used to for landings. It's not easy to put her down because even at idle she's not slowing down too much. Flying it in circles and straight it only takes about 1/3 throttle so it can really move. But I'm really happy with it. I think I'll name it Old Faithful LOL

to help slow the plane down a bit you may want to try a diffrent prop.

if you have say a 11x6 on there try a 11x5 or so.

the flatter "pitch" (second number) will help it slow down a bit

ask you instructor if he thinks this is a good idea and what prop he would recomend.

Default Maybe Original Ugly Stik

With the scalloped trailing edges, it is identical to the original Ugly Stik. I don't know of any other Stick that had scalloped trailing edges.

I have a Thunder Tiger Stick with a Thunder Tiger Pro46 and an APC 11x4 prop. It will do far more than I am capable of doing with it yet it lands much easier than many trainers.

I could be wrong, I usually am, but it looks alot like my World Models "Super Stunts", but re-covered, and the "cowl" sawed off. In any case, I'd bet that it fly's alot like it. The Super Stunts (for my money) is a superior trainer, and a pretty aerobatic 2nd plane. Dloesn't knife edge for squat though.

Default ASP engines

Hi Drew,

ASP are still going strong. The 3rd generation engines are much better than the earlier models (now very similar to OS). I recently bought my ASP .65 4-stroke in the UK from the UK distributor Just Engines (website site www.justengines.co.uk). I believe they sell quite a bit into the US but not sure about Canada. They are very helpful and may be able to advise on which engine you have and how to look after it.

Best of luck with the new plane and your entry into the mystical world of RC models & flying,

Bob

Drew,

ASP engines are available through Horizon Hobbies. I have an ASP 120 2-stroke that is just awesome.
