Default 2nd Plane Blues:(

Hi Everyone,
I'm fairly new to rc flying. I got started with an hobbico avistar, and i'm fairly confident handling it. I was looking to move a step above.
I am thinking bout:
1) CG Tiger2
2) GP Super Sportster
3) Any other recomedations......

i have already bought a new OS .46AX and Futaba 7CAF with 3151 sevos to fit in the plane.

Also are nose wheel in front kinda planes easier to land???
This might sound stupid[:-] but i realy wana get a plane with 2 aeliron servos.....somehow using my shiny new 7CAF to have flaperons seems very exciting..... maybe 1 servo aeliron are as exciting ......don't know if i'm being real here.

One more thing i got the radio pack with 3151 servos cuz it was just $15 more than the 3004 deal, but now i have come to know that 3151 servo have higher battery drain, thereby reducing my fun[&o] time at the field on the standard Rx battery that came with it. Is this drain significantly high????

i'm sorry to be putting so many questions your way, new to the hobby so always have a lota questions.

thanks
Ken

Tiger 2 -- you can use 2 aileron servos. Oh, by the way, it flies well too.

Ditto on the Tiger. it's an excellent second plane.

As far as nose wheels go, there's no huge difference in landing, but take off is MUCH easier with a nose wheel.

Save the Super sportster for a third plane.

GP Ultra Sport Plus. No experience but hear they build and fly great and I think they look nicer than the Super Sport. It'll be my 1st kit, 2nd plane.

I'm for the tiger2 as well. Sticks like glue on landings.

Definitely the Tiger 2. There is no better 1st low wing plane than the Tiger 2. It is a great flyer. It will be perfect with the 46 AX. Forget about the flaperons---you won't need them. It lands very easliy--it will make you look good, time after time. We have three of them that we use for our Young Aviators program when the kids make the transition from an LT-40 to low wing. I have a Tiger 60 that is over ten years old and I try to fly it every weekend.

Don't forget about the classic 4*. It will do well on the 46AX and lands better than most trainers

As far as your list goes, the Tiger 2 would be the one. The SuperSportster is a bit faster when landing.

One more vote for the Tigger 2. It builds nicely and is easily modified for dual aileron servos and taildragger.
(Check my gallery for example photos.)

As far as the battery question. The digital servos will drain that battery fairly quick. I have a 3D plane with the same servos plus 2 extra servos and I only get about 3 10-12 minute flights before I get nervous about battery usage.

Check out NOBS batteries, great prices and you can get a 1100mah pack or more that will keep you in the air for awhile.

If you dont have one already you will want ot get a Hobico voltwatch or something similar. Then before every flight you wont have any doubt how much juice you have left in your flight pack.

For your second plane you wont use much in the way of mixes, that will come later with a 3D plane or scale plane. However 2 aleron servos will give you better response.

I love my Tiger 2.....it was my 2nd plane and I still really enjoy flying it. After about a year and a half as a trike gear, I converted mine to a tail dragger. It makes a great 1st taildragger because of the long tail moment.

Tiger 2 is great choice and a tri cycle gear is the ticket on a second plane in my opinion. Also I might add that you should be more than "fairly confident" before you move on to a higher performance plane.

There is another alternitive to your battery delima. I put 6 volt in just about every thing I fly. I also opt for hi cap NIMH.

Have fun and fly well.

I have a Tiger 2 with OS .46 AX in it. It flies great and will handle wind too. Mine has the trike gear on but I am gonna change that
next year to a taildragger. I had to change out the nose wheel on mine as the metal was too soft. I put on a dubro front gear/wheel.
Also, mount your engine closer to the front of the engine mount and, get yourself a 1600 nimh rx pack. I can fly on mine more than 20 flights until I have to charge it. The center of the CG on this plane is where the main gear is mounted on the wing (trike gear setup).
BTW, thats a Tiger 2 in my avatar beside Brutus, my rottweiler co-pilot.

I am wanting to change over to 6 volt too. But 6 volt wont extend your battery life just give you more torque and quicker servo response.

Actually 6 volts will lessen your flight time. You use more battery at higher voltages. As suggested with digitals you just need a bigger battery. An 1100 would be just fine. As an aside some digital servo's cannot be run on 6 volts. 6 volts is a good idea with standard servo's where more speed and power is needed.

I will also say ditto on the Tiger II. I have one and it is a fantastic flier. The 4*40 would be another choice. And so would the Sig Midstar 40. I have one and it is a sweet flying bird.

Mark Shuman

PS: I agree with your purchase. Those digitals will really help with your next few models. The extra precision and speed is well worth the coupla extra bucks you paid. Good choice.

With digital servos (or having 7+ servos or so in a plane draining ALOT), cant we use the new Li-Pos for our flightpacks? Or arent there any TXs that can use them yet? The electric fliers seems to have a revolution going on at their end of the field, so why cant we get the advantage too?

Get a tail dragger! 4 star - Stingray 40 Tail dragger much easier to taxi.
