A good first bipe is the Sig Hog Bipe, but it's a kit not an ARF. That was my first bipe and I still have it. It can do stunts(knife edge, snap rolls & more) and can still be a relatively gentle plane and it floats real well. I have a O.S. 91FS in mine with a 14x6 prop. The plane has a long moment so it's not a hand full on the ground as opposed to a plane like the Pitts Special(short moment). There's a couple of Tiger Moth ARFs out there that I'm sure are gentle fliiers. There's also the Ultimate Bipes that I think you should'nt go to from trainers, they're very responsive and stall a little easier but once you're good with bipes they're a blast. Well that's just one man's opinion. Good Luck.

second the hog, you might also check out the .40 thunder tiger bipe, I just saw an ad for this, runs on a .36 two stroke or a .53 four stroke. Let us know what you choose. Loren

I have a Kyoso tiger moth, flat bottom wings, a real floter!!, I placed a os 70 4-s, with a 12x8, I have been trainning with it new comers and beginners, although not the right plane for someone to learn to take off and land, students pickup the basis real fast with it,
I will recomend it to you, besides it is well built and well finished
it is an ARF, with the 70 4-s, I did not put any extra weight, it balanced perfect!!
you can fly it real slow and wind does not affect it that much.
I do not have experience with the hog.

5th for the Hog. I have it, and I love it. I also have a Saito .91 FS in mine, and it will just go!
Three...was yours tail heavy with the .91? (I went with the 4" CG, maybe further back.)

KitBuilder,
No, my Hog was nose heavy. Probably because I put a cowl on mine. It is a bit heavy for a cowl. I forget what plane it's from, but if you want to know I'll try to find out. I had to add about 7oz of lead to the tail and the CG is still futher forward than I like(3.750) but I don't want to add more lead. I also left off the head rest. It's a great plane, I love it too.

My first bipe was a sig profile ultimate with os52fs. Building by the prints, and flyin on low rates the plane was surprisingly easy to fly, landings were a little hotter than a mono plane, but not much more.On high rates the ***** cat turned into a full grown tiger, will do almost anything, and still be controllable. The hog is good too,but I like my little sig ultimate bipe, many, many flights and still have it.
Have a goodun,John.

Got to 6th the Hog Bipe. Running mine with a Magnum .91 4-stroke. Just doesn't get any better than this - once you move the landing gear forward about 1/2 inch.
Just an all around well behaved plane.
Take care and hope this info helps.

I have the Sig profile Ultimate too. Got a Super Tigre 51 on it w/ 12x4 APC. Heck of an airplane. It's a blast. But I would'nt recommend it to someone who's been flying trainers for only a year.

Not done with it yet, but it sure is pretty (GP Super Skybolt). I'm putting a .91 Saito in it. It's going to be my first Bi-plane......I am getting such good reviews about how much people love their bipes. I can't wait to fly it!

If you are interested in the Sig Hog Bipe, here is a nice build thread you can review and use as a guide in building your own.

BTW - it's nickname is "The Sig Pig"

Wow, alpinestar should win a prize for resurrecting a thread this old!
Good first bipe ARFs include:
GP Skybolt
GP Tiger Moth (recently discountinued, but still in LHS)
Sig Sundancer 50
Model Tech SE-5a
I'd certainly like to add a Hog Bipe to my list of projects; alas it will be a while before I can consider buying another kit. Too many projects waiting for spare time now as it is.
I tried buying a Tiger Bipe last year, they've been out of production a while. It's a shame, too.

You just can't beat the Hog Bipe I've been flying them for years. Then all my buddy’s went to the larger gassers so I followed them and what did I build? Well a 16% larger Hog Bipe of course. I just enlarged the plans with my PC cad software and put a 35cc engine on her she flies just beautiful.
When learning to fly RC airplanes you start with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. Your goal is to fill the experience bag up before your luck runs out.

my first was the gp super skybolt. i love it. only problem i've had is getting the thing slow enough to land!!! have to make around 2 patterns throttled WAY back. it floats in nice and settles for 3 points like a breeze. don't get me wrong, this plane nor ANY bipe will fly itslelf. i noticed you've been flying around a year with trainers. i would suggest getting an edge 540 or an extra 300 just for the sake of learning to bring a plane in under power. while they do fly like nothing else, most biped DON'T land like trainers.
...back to the skybolt. the great thing now is it comes in KIT and ARF. i built the kit while honing my powered landing skills. working on and off it took me around 8 months to complete it. here's a link to the maiden flight report.

and here's a link to a great build thread where there's two skybolts built from start to finish

good luck with whichever one you choose.....keep us posted as to how it goes.
