G,day Everyone

I'm having my old man send my old trainers to me so that i can get back into the sport. Seeing as I now live on the other side of australia to him, what is the best and safest way to get the birds over here without snapping a wing or two? He is talking about knocking up a wooden box to fit them into but considering the probable weight cost and his lack in abilities with a hammer and nail, surely there must be a better way.

Take a vacation/holiday and go see him. Bring planes back with you.

I agree w/ cwrr5... If not yes Have him (Or somone who you do trust w/ hammer/nails) make a crate.

Assuming that you have indeed moved across the country, and given that you refer to them as "old trainers", at the end of the day it might be quicker and cheaper to buy a new plane.

Why not get your old man to rip the engines and radio out and just send this across. Properly packed it should travel OK and at reasonable cost.

My experience of planes and guys with trucks, gained over a couple of house moves, has not been good.

Redback-- nothing to do with present subject, but noticed your icon and "name"; just how big do those buggers get, any way? They look like, and I think they are "cousins" of the Black Widows we have here in the States. Seems like every time I grab a log for the fireplace, or turn over a cinder block I almost grab one of the *******s (or *****es, as the case actually is), and the ones I find uncomfortably close to my fingers are about 1-1/2 inches (3 -3 1/2 cm) long. Never been bit, but I'd rather stand in a bucket of copperheads (local pit viper) as grab one of those things. Gives me the willies. G'day to you, too. Ken

Ken, have you ever seen a kangaroo?? Well they`re almost as big. I`d stand in a bucket of pit vipers too.

Redback, Your old man, or maybe his delegate if he`s as skilled with a hammer as you say, could build real light out of eighth ply with a light external frame. Use sheet styrene foam to support the wings/fuselages. Just cut out sections in the foam to locate the parts, and take up any slack with bubble plastic.

Could be expensive to ship though, and the cost, along with the risk may make it worth just buying new aircraft and have the engines and radio gear sent.

Where in Australia do you live? I`ll be back there in six months.

Japanflyer, its me dude, not redback with the planes that need to be shipped, but either way thanks for you advice. I'm starting to go for the idea of building a new plane all together.. give me something to do over the christmas break from work! I ran it past the wife to and see didnt object, which is as good to a yes as i can get!! So i think that is the way i'll be going.

As for the redbacks? geezus guys, they're not that big and lets face it, there is alot more to worried about than them in australia, tiger snakes, king brown snakes, lotsa snakes. that and your plane going dead stick and drifting of the club car park....that had the heart going let me tell you

JapanFlyer, as to where i live in australia... well were havent i lived. I grew up in the west, but joined the air force 3 years ago and so far have traveled to 5 of the six states. I'm currently in Canberra, but on my way to Adelaide in Jan.

2CRU eh? Were you an ASOP? I'm in the middle of applying for a commission to fighter controller at the moment, ASOP is my back up plan if it falls thru. I Want to work at 3CRU and then hopefully at 3 SQN on the new AEWAC's *Fingers Cross* Get to play with bigger faster planes then!
