Default Does FuntanaS 90 aileron hinges could be ??

Anything out there different than CA hinges with more strength?
I am not sure if CA hinges will be enough strong for a size 90 3D airplane frame like FuntanaS 90.
Heard so many failure stories from other FuntanaS 90 owners regarding the hinge failures.
So, any other ideas for hinges? And if there's some other solution who makes it ?
Thanks in advance,

Jim

You could try Robart Pin Hinges.

Cheers.

I only use medium size hinges with the mettle pins between the 2 halves. Then I also drill a small hole right through the hinge and pin them with a round toothpick covered in epoxy. Never had one break out yet, even in a crash .

The ca hinges are fine and are what should be used. The reason you hear so much about wing failures with this plane is because of improper radio gear and flying.

CA hinges are fine, as long as they're installed properly. Most CA hinge failures are due to not allowing a small gap. If you don't leave a gap of about 1/16th inch it stresses the hinge and they can break.

Jim,

In answer to your question Robart hinges are the cats meow in my eyes and will work well BUT (isn't there always a but)

I have that plane and well over 100 very hard flights on it using the CA hinges with now problems at all. I did follow this how-to and it works out well

And since we are talking Robart hinges, here is the how-to for them

Had a friend that used an alternate hinge on his, got aileron flutter and H9 did not want to discuss any warranty issues, because he didn't use their hinges. The early versions of this plane had major issues with the strength of the servo mounting design. Many of us that built the early version removed bottom covering and beefed up the servo mounting area with light ply and webing. Also the original design of the ball pivot going on the flimsy contro horn they have, could also flex causing flutter. Most of us used stronger hardware, 130 oz. in. metal gear, double BB servos on the ailerons and rudder and 90 oz. in. servos on the elevators. We even have a few of the rich guys using 8411's or 8611's, but this seems like overkill. We also used the original H9 CA hinges, sealed all the surfaces with clear covering and fly them like we stole them. No problems so far, just keep your speed down on the down lines. Great, neutral, responsive plane, lots of fun. The OS .90 FX with a APC 15X6 does pretty good, but the new hyp .91 OS pumped helo engine is awesome on this plane.
Have fun and happy landings.

One way to prevent CA hinge failure is to squeeze the balsa together while glue is still wet to ensure better bond and make sure there no gaps betweem hinge and balsa that thin CA cannot gap over. I always do a crash analysis and have noticed sometimes glue did not penetrate to rear of hinge.
