Is the cub a good starter if so what size

to make it simple! NO. If you have never flown, the cub would be a hand full for you. I would suggest getting a large trainer like a Sig Kadet LT 40. I have one and it the best in my eyes. Cubs are pretty and it will be my next purchase. but until I learn to fly better, LT 40 is the way.

The LT40 is a great choice, but there are lots of other choices for a trainer plane, such as the Tower Trainer. Do some searches in RCU, you can find many threads discussing trainer planes and the tools and equipment you need to get started. One more thing to do is to find a local club or instructor. Some manufacturers will make it sound like their plane is so simple to fly that you can do it yourself. Don't believe them. A few people do this and are sucessful. Most who try give up after crashing and repairing their plane over and over.

let me tell you my story, ive been flying 8 yrs, off and on, not straight, i just took the last year off and sold all my stuff (dumb move that was![>:])

so now ive got the bug again, and im starting with a Sig LT-40, ive never had one of these, ive allways started with the tower trainer 60 and quite frankly never did really like it, it seemed like i was coming in to fast for my landings, there ok, but ive heard nothing but great things about an LT-40

sure i could PROBABLY handle a hotter low wing airplane, its still tempting to get one, but i figured hey why not be safe and get something I KNOW i can handle instead of MAYBE handle

besides if you want to just want a day of relaxing flying, i've heard you cant beat putzin around with a LT-40

That's the great thing about this hobby, there is not just ONE right plane. What works for many, the Tower Trainer, did not work for you. No problem, you've found what you enjoy.

You are getting good advice. A Cub is not a good beginner plane.

WOW,,,,wondering if i should stop training people how to fly with cubs,,,,,hehehehehehehe,,,the cub to me is a great trainer,,as i recall,,,there were alot of real pilots train'd in this plane,,,,all im saying is that a good cub can be used if the instuctor is there to help....just as a trainer type plane...hehehehehe,,,Rod...

the cub is a good plane, but the take off is skettchy, i watched a video the other day where a guy had to hand launch it

heres another vote for teh LT-40. check out the "lt-40 pilots role call" thread for people who are currently flying lt-40s. we like it, but most make some modifications. that is all.

Yep I have an LT-40 its awsome!! Once I get better I am going to convert it to a Tail Dragger. Thats the most common mod. And some take out the dehedral(sp) on the wing so its more arobatic.

lt 25 is a good'un too!

Depends on the cub kit. There are many I would not suggest for anyone, they just don't fly right. Had a friend with a cub, he was a good pilot, but the plane was almost uncontrollable. Scared me from cubs for a long time.

The Goldberg cub could be used as a trainer any time! It is the best flying cub there is. I would not hesitate to teach on it. The Great planes is OK, but not quite as good. Some others are OK, but some are not. If you have to have a cub, make it a goldberg and you will be far ahead.

I agree that the LT 40 would be a better choice, or an eagle II or anything in that category. Much easier to learn on, but the GB cub would be a very trainable bird.
