Default My First Trainee!

I learned to fly only last June. Today, I started teaching someone how to fly brand new to flying r/c. He did great. I was probably more nervous than he was. He had a Sig Kadet LT 40. I didn't know those things were taildraggers. I have almost zero experience with taildraggers so I was nervous about taking her up the first time, plus the wind was nice at 15 MPH!!!!! My first takeoff was not impressive, but we got her up and with my student on the buddy box, he flew her around and did very well. Never rolled her from a bank. We got in 4 flights today on the buddy box, each time flight skills improving. It was so much fun today helping someone get started in our great hobby and seeing his plane go home in one piece. Seems he had tried once before to fly by himself with *usual* results. I'm looking forward to helping him develop his skills up to solo status!

*This is the most awesome hobby!*

Heheh, the wife was pleased to see me come home with my plane in one piece this time!!

I actually converted my LT-40 to taildragger configuration myself... they start out life as tricycle gear. But, pretty much all of the aircraft I want to eventually fly are taildraggers, so I figured might as well start out on one.

I just want to say thanks again to you, your Dad, Allen, and Paul for helping me out today. Your teaching skills are just fine, and I learned alot. If I wasnt hooked on R/C before, I DEFINITELY am now!! I am looking forward to a long friendship and many good flying days with you guys!

Oh yeah, the LT-40 will be wearing some different colors on the bottoms of the wings by next weekend, so the visibility will be better.

I know how you feel. I tought my dad how to fly about 7-8 years ago. That was weird, but I know it was the best thing for him at the time. Recently I took him flying in a fullscale. He said he almost started crying he was so proud, Thats cool to me.

I can remember the first time I took my dad up in a fullscale back in '90... I think the ink was still wet on my private license. He had an absolute ball! He passed away about a year and a half ago, but that airplane ride is one of those special times I will always remember.

I took my dad up flying shortly after I got my private pilot license too. He was proud also. He had flown P-38 photo recon out of England in WWII and had not had his hands on controls since VE day. Since then has passed and is missed greatly of course.

You guys are going to get me all sentimental. Those are some wonderful memories with your dads. I'm soooo lucky to still have mine around. And he too got into this hobby the same time me and my brother did. We spend more time together now than we have likely our whole lives. Sometimes I have to stop and get back in sync because I'm taking too much time away from my kids. So, I'm taking them on a cruise this May. That ought to make up for lots of flying weekends! !!! Plus, if I can ever get my 11 year old son to get involved, I've got the battle won, because my daughter is 14 so she don't miss me much when I'm gone...

You first student is always special as you are paassing along knowledge as you would a son or daughter. I remember mine all to well and for that matter every student. The guy that instructed me still smiles big when he sees me fly and I am the same way when I see my ex-students fly. I get the warm and fuzzies all over then go fly with them which makes them feel good.

Congrats, you'll do well as an instrcutor

Twistr, unless I had known I was your first student, I would never have been able to tell. I was at ease right off the bat, and you explained everything very well. You are confident enough to let me make some mistakes, but at the same time, know exactly when to take over to keep me from getting in over my head. I'm looking forward to our next session already!

Oh yeah, I'm working on that "no rain" dance!
