Hello,
I recently have been getting into RC, and bought a Firebird Commander. I'm still flying the same one (although I think I have given this thing about 4 lives... I seem to be pretty good at repairing some pretty devistating crashes). I am looking to move on to a 3ch. plane (I need elevator!!!) but i'm not sure where to go next. I have looked at the Aerobird Extreme, as well as a few others, but I think I am doing that only because I already have a hobbyzone. I also would like to be able to fly in some heavier winds as well, as I almost lost her yesterday. I am thinking that I would like to build one as well, but am not sure what kits are good for semi-beginners... I am pretty crafty, so I dont think I would have too much trouble with something a little more intermediate. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Scott

Hey slow, are you joking or what?? I am not that fat and neither is the plane. I have cut and pasted the specs from Tower Hobbies as follows.
The plane might look big in the pic, but its still pretty light! It comes with a speed 400 motor.
Thats why they call it the Tiger 400.
Wingspan: 39" (990mm)
Wing Area: 297 sq in (19.2 sq dm)
Flying Weight with 2-Cell Li-Po Battery: 1.1 lb (499g)
Length: 31" (787mm)[8D]

So, it's electric. You didn't state that. Yes, I was joking--that's why I put the
in there. The picture you posted was of the tiger 2 arf, which is a 40 sized bird (as opposed to 400 sized). Thought you hit the 0 key one too many times. I didn't notice the electric motor up front....My bad. I'll dry up the humor since it bothers you....

Not bothered and not to worry 2, I just wanted to makes sure that SDe knew that I was giving an honest suggestion as to a plane that might be a good choice for a next step up. He is flying electric planes now and thats why I looked at those. The pics are simply did a copy and paste of the Tiger 400 from the TH site. Its not a pic of the Tiger 2 although from the pics its hard to see the round electric motor instead of a glow engine! They also used the same colors. Personally I am pro glow power for training and then fly whatever you want after that but thats me! [8D]

I love my glows, but I'm fixing to get a small electric to fly around the house (3 acres). I tried a chea pass (.10 sized glow) but you need more room for even that. I'm thinking of one of those 4D foamies or something similar.

I watched a video on this site of an electric plane from Grauper called a Funky Chicken. It looked like a decent flyer, not real aerobatic but fast enough and fun to watch. It doesn't take up much room to land. [8D]

2slow2matter,
Try mountainmodels.com I'm sure they have something in a balsa kit that you would find affordable and rewarding! I've got the Smoothe which has been a great plane and I'm building a Dandy GT. both are really good electric airplanes. By the way how's the Contender, does it still live?
Regards
Mike

I know from personal experience that the Tiger II flys just great as does the Tiger 60 so I would imagine that the Tiger 400 will follow suit and be an excellent electric flyer for you. Very comfortable flying airplane... The glow's have no surprises, land very smoothly and solidly.

flmlm,
yes, the contender lives on. A few wingtip scrapes, but no blowouts yet! I like the way it flies. Good model, and good kit to start on. I'm building a topflite gold t-6 texan right now--what a kit!

excellent. thanks a lot. I would like to go glow, but i haven't found the room yet... i need to find a local fly spot with a runway...anywhere to search for local fly spots? The only thing big enough that I know of are the 4H grounds near me, probably too small for glow...

You can check out the AMA which is where you get your RC flying insurance. They have a search area where you plunk in what state you live in and a list of RC clubs will show up. Follow the link below. If there is a hobby shop in your area that sells RC planes, ask them, they will know where the flyers go and if there are any nearby clubs. Btw, runways don't have to be made of asphalt or cement. Our club has 2 long runways which is just nice grass cut like a lawn. You need a bit bigger tires to roll over the grass but it makes the landings softer if you bounce. Bounce on cement and you have a broken prop! [8D]
