Check with AMA and find a club near there/you. You should then be able to get an instructor lined up pretty easy. http://www.modelaircraft.org/clubsearch.aspx led me to these:

Hope this helps.

SWG, There is an RC club that flies at the airport in Smithville. Don't know who to contact. If you want to get involved in CL I can help you out.

Cool I will have to check that out I am by there a lot but never see anyone out flying maybe I will have to check a little closer on the weekends. Any help would be appreciated.
Bruce I too looked those guys up on the AMA site but it is noted they don’t take newbies and since I am new to gas flight that would be me.
I also heard there is a group that meets in Manor, Texas on the weekends thought I would drive out and see about them I really would like to get with a group that could show me the ropes I have a friend that is a little more knowledgeable then I, but is looking for the same thing too. He has a glider and a trainer 40 but I hear a glider Is a bad word![&o]
I have a trainer 40 and a biplane (Laird Solution) 60 but I want to get good at flying before I take up the biplane!

Steelwoolghandi- I don't know where you read what you read but I just went to the Club web sites I listed. I couldn't tell from the Austin RC site so I e-mailed him about students and have not received an answer yet. The other club, Hill Country, has about 14 instructors on staff for student training. Why don't you check out their site and contact them directly if you are serious.

Steelwoolghandi- I heard back from Austin RC, here is their answer:
yes we do train new students. Loyd coordinates the training right
now, he is out at the field most every weekend. there is no cost
and yes we do have buddy boxes. typically we will do a few
sessions without a membership to the club, but you do need ama
membership. www.modelaircraft.org
let me know if you have any other questions.
Pat
No more excuses. GO FLY!!! and have fun

As Jim said there is a club in Smithville and I think I know of one in Manor they are just not AMA but they are closer I am serious about finding a local club but I would like to find one that takes Newbies but also one closer by if I find the close ones (non AMA) do not take Newbies then I will contact the Farther ones (AMA Clubs). That’s all I was trying to say Bruce.
Thanks for the Offer Jim any info or help would be appreciated.

I don't know if you have read my post #9 or not. I have contacted both of the clubs I listed and they both train new students (thats you). If you don't wish to personally contact one of them, so be it, travel twice as far if you want. The AMA site is not always correct BTW as this has proved.
I've spent enough time on this. Good luck, whatever way you choose.

Bruce thanks for the information I was not trying to be rude in any way just stating what the AMA website says. Again those 2 clubs are Farther away then the Non AMA clubs so I was going to check out the Smithville and Manor clubs first (They are Closer) and see what they have to offer.
If the closer ones are not what I am looking for I will contact the ones you listed I have there websites saved. I would just hate to drive an Hour to get to a club if I could get there in 15 min is all.
Again I appreciate the information Bruce.

BTW- the AMA Intro program does not mean whether or not they train students, it is a special program the AMA endorses for a 3 month period I believe so that prospective fliers can try flying without as big of a financial commitment. If anyone knows more on this, please speak up. You can probably get more info on AMA site, if interested. Program requires special INTRO instructors and a lot more paperwork etc. Not sure how well it is being accepted.

The AMA intro program is a try before you buy deal. Intro pilots can take someone up with a club owned trainer on a buddy box and the clubs AMA insurance will cover them.
