Default Setting Throttle Servo Throw

I'm making an assumption that the correct throws should be set from Idle to WOT. My question, is the trim then used to shut the engine down? Or is the throw set from dead stick to WOT and then the trim is set to open the throttle to Idle before take off?

Thanks

It kinda depends on the type of radio you have. the second option is closer but some radios also have separate kill buttons or switch functions.
Before we go any further it would help to know radio mfg and exact model.

If your radio has no "kill" features the normal procedure is to set the throttle stick and trim to minimum and have the eng kill at that point. Then after opening the trim approx 1/2 way you should be able to start and be adjust slightly for idle control. Naturally WOT will be at the extreme of full throttle stick. In many radios the trim has little/no effect at wot. You should make adjustment with the mechanical linkages as best you can before starting to do it electronically with EPA and other "special features".

I believe this will get you going . Would still like to know what radio you have though.

Ideally, the trim should be in the middle when the engine is at idle. I do this by adjusting the pushrod so that the carb is open just a tiny bit when the throttle is back and trim at in the middle. This way I can trim back to kill the engine. Nowadays, I program a separate kill switch on the radio to do this.

If you set the throw from dead stick and open the trim to get to idle you may end up not having enough trim to open the throttle. Also if you did it that way you'd be in effect readjusting the idle everytime you fly which could mess up your day if you didn't get it just right.

It's a Hitec Focus 4 with ATV on all channels.

Thanks

If you combine what DamonTX and I said before, read your manuals carefully and then set up your mechanical linkages as close as possible. You will then be able to fine tune with the ATV. On all of the controls, make your adjustments using the linkages first and THEN fall back on the electronics. This policy will serve you well now and on future planes too. Always get the basics first and then get fancy. This will also apply to your flying.

Hope you have a good time with your plane. What are you putting this in?

Bruce,

It's a Alpha 40 with a GMS 40. I've broken in the GMS and as of yet not encountered the horror stories yet. I start with the instructor at my club in about a week. I've waited a very long time to do this and I intend to go slow, learn the ropes, and just plain have fun. I got the ARF version of the Alpha and actually it helped me learn some simple construction techniques as I loved to build Guillows stick and tissue models and I plan to actually build a couple of models in the future.

Thanks to Damon and Bruce.
