Damn! I need to get this out of my system, i almost got hit today [&:]
I was at the field just flying the T-34, i was on my second flight of the day and i had been flying around 5 minutes or so, and someone yelled "WATCH OUT!!!" and half a second later BAM!! an Easy Sport splats right next to me from behind about 2 feet away!
I became so nervous, jumpy and un-focused that i could barely fly, and obviously i BARELY landed it (without a scratch fortunately)
I wanted to kick the cr4p out of that dude [:@]
I nearly got hit in the head, that would have been "a little" painfull [&o]

joesabido,
Man, I hate to hear about things like that happening. I feel for you. I actually got hit by a plane last year. Luckily the motor (Saito 120 to give you some idea of how big of a plane) died right before it hit me, but the plane took me to the ground. I wasn't flying, but instead was in the parking lot at the back of my truck (yes, he really screwed up and was flying someplace he shouldn't have been) when I got hit. It layed me out flat on the ground. I was fine after it happened, and even flew a couple of more flights that morning as well as teaching a student. But that night when I was home and went to bed I ran it through my mind and I got the shakes and had to get up, couldn't sleep the rest of the night. Then next morning I had a bruise that covered about 75% of my back, and I was really sore.
Since then I have been a stickler about safe flying and staying away from the pits and parking lot. In fact, some at the field probably think I'm pretty much an a**hole because of how much I preach about it. But I don't want to see anybody else go through that. It turned out ok, but could have been much much worse if the motor had still been running.
Once again, I'm really glad that you are ok.
Ken

Never got hit, But i almost flew over the pits (up high and in full control) today for the first time. Luckily with my sweet skills i got it turned before the runway. ;-).
Well, There was one time someone was maidening a WW1 plane, and it was all over the sky and it almost hit me. The guys at the field still say thats the fastest i've ever run. I make a point to hustle to the plane on the runway now if i have to go out there to show them ;-)

Sometimes it's the pilot's fault, sometimes it isn't. Either way, this brings to the fore a very valuable lesson:
The planes we fly are MACHINES. And like any other machine, they have NO emotions. They DO NOT CARE what, who, where, or when they hit.
joesabido, very glad you weren't hurt.
And in a bit of a thread jack, that avatar of yours is HILARIOUS. Fellow geek, I offer you the Coffee Cup of Admiration, +2. That's awesome.

Thanks Ken & gboulton for your kind comments.
The only ones "hurt" were my pants [&:]
Ken: Really sucks to hear what happened to you, i'm sure you must be a pain in the butt for some, always preachin' about safety & stuff, but THAT kind of "pain" is better than the one on your back! Good thing that prop wasn't spining, you could have resulted badly injured (i've seen what props do to fingers, i don't want to even imagine what it can do to the skin on our backs)
This time i think it was the pilot's fault, cause he had been flying above our heads and above the parking lot and he is just learning to fly.
It sucked BIG time!
The only good think i could bring home after that was a picture that one of the members took while i was doing some knife-edge's
BTW.. i didn't understand the "geek" part [&:]
gboulton: glad you liked my 'tar

I feel a hijack coming on. I too do computer work for a living. I am the unix guy for a small ISP here in Alaska.
When I first started flying I would fly overhead, but after reading about Ken's story, studying safety, and reading my AMA safety guidelines, I now establish a flight line and bring someone along with me to enforce it while I'm flying.
Glad no one was hurt.

Computer geek here as well. .NET Programmer and have a few books published through Wrox press on Commerce Server/Site Server.
I get really upset when people fly behind the flight line. The only time I did it I was trimming my plane out and controls were not where they should be but if it's a continuous thing either on purpose or because someone doesn't have the control to fly safely they do not need to be there or they need an instructor with a buddy box.
If there is a problem with the airplane it is the persons responsibility to be yelling like a madman that they do not have control just to let everyone know to take cover. Accidents happen and we need to make sure that we do everything within our power to make sure no one is injured. I had rather lose a plane any day than to to see it hit someone
For that matter, I don't like low passes over the runway when people are flying. Our club has rules against it for a reason. high speed pass over the runway with 3 or 4 people on the flight line and a battery/reciever or transmitter has problems - someone might be killed.

I am sorry about you getting almost hit. I did see someone get hit by his own son because he thought he (son) had excellent building and piloting skills and on takeoff the plane went it's own way and hit "dad" on his hand while dad was flying, radio dropped and broke, dad's plane spiralled down at full throttle. Needless to say "dad was mad. It turned out the battery connector to the switch was not tied in any way and the connector came apart. Sons plane was fine, Dad's plane was totalled

Tommy: I agree with you, I know I can get hurt and I know i WILL get hurt sometime(s), but that doesn't mean you don't get scared/pissed when it happens
PS .- Wish me luck!! Hurricane Emily is about to strike here [:@] http://www.weather.com/maps/news/atl..._animated.html

I was almost hit twice one week ( about three weeks ago). One was a guy trying to solo (I think) An instructor was next to him in case anything went wrong. I was up high messing around while he tried to bring it in, after two or three go arounds, he came in and touched down, but bounced. He decided to throttle up and go around again. Without even looking where its headed (into the pilots box), he starts to throttled up, even though its aimed at my legs. He pulls up like in a takeoff. All of this is less than 8-10 feet away. Now its aimed at my chest. Instructor grabbed the radio and nosed it straight in from 3 feet at near stall speed. No damage. Supposedly he crashed into the fence behind the pilot box the next day. Then during the week I went flying and had just landed when one pilot made a fly by and throttled up, barely clearing the fence between the runway and pit box and headed right for my truck, where I was sitting. I gotta say, I've never been that close to a engine that was running. He pulled vertical flew up over and crashed into the barb wire fence on the property line. Supposedly he had crashed two planes before I got there that day. I left after that, and almost got hit by an 18-wheeler that ran a red light. I felt like locking myself indoors.

My I suggest that you mysql guys should look at postgres. Writing procedures in php, perl, plsql, is very cool. I switched years ago, and now I can't live without procs, triggers, sequences, and views. I have one database with 3+ million rows in it that lives though 60k inserts a day.

Good luck with that Ken!
I'm sure it will work flawlessly
Emily should strike this city tomorrow before the morning comes.
I've already charged all my TX & RX batteries, so i won't get bored if we're out of electricity for a few days [8D]

Don't even go there Bubba. One of my bigger clients has their home office in that area. We are already making preparations to evacuate the servers. We had a hurricane plan in place from day one when they moved down there. We have backup servers located here in Oklahoma that backs up all data every night in the event that we can evac the servers from down there. They also all have laptops that they work on, so they can pick them up and transport them out. If needed they could come up here to Oklahoma and be back up and working in less than a day. Looks like we're going to get to test our plan on this one!!!
