Default High wing to low wing transition

I learned to fly with my Eagle 2. Built and flew well so bought and built a Tiger 2. Have an OS46FX for it, just need a radio system.

I am assuming a couple of changes when I transition. The Tiger's symetrical wing will not be as lifty and floaty as the Eagle flat bottom.

The low, less dihedral wing will make it hold position, vs correcting to level as with the Eagle.

Faster approaches/stall speeds.

Am I close? Will the differences be "significant"? Once I get "bored" (prob a poor choice of word) with the Eagle, the Tiger will come out. Just trying to make sure I know what to expect. Ist Tiger flights will be with an instructor/experienced pilot.

Thx,

Dave

I have been told that the Tiger 2 is a great second plane, that is easy to fly and land, and a little more stable. It was actually recommended to me by a freind as a second plane for me.

Im getting ready to make the transition from my trainer to a low wing, im building a 4* 40 with a TT Pro 46.

the tiger 2 is an outstanding second plane, and true, if you have much ambition to make yourself a better pilot ,you will get bored of a trainer because no matter how well you fly it, it is still a trainer, thats when it is time to pull out the t2 and put the eagle on floats !!!!! ,you wont get bored of that . The t2 flies very good even at very low speed ,it does have a slightly higher stall speed but you really almost have to try and stall it, the big difference in landing it is instead of pulling back to idle when you are still flying away from you on a trainer, you wait until you are on final with the t2 and maybe hold it just one or two clicks up off idle til just before you get over the run way and do a gentle flair and VIOLA !!, a sweet touch down.Once you learn to fly a semi or even a full symmetrical wing you will learn to love it because you can actually control the decent rate and speed much easier than you can a trainer.I have told most of my students that once you feel comfortable with a trainer, move on , because i truly think you will progress more rapidly with the second plane if you dont have all those misconceptions on your mind, just do it !!! , by the way , just my opinion and i realize alot may disagree.

Goo words, thanks guys. I had the idea that I may convert my Tiger to a taildragger "trainer" to get over that "bump" (taildraggers have me a but intimidated, this could be the easiest path).

Sounds like fun times ahead!!

Ditto to everything midget racer says! You will LOVE the T2. And your assesment is right on the nose. The T2 flys a lot like the Eagle, but without the self-righting thing. When you want to turn, feed in the aileron and elevator, you will find that you usually have to release the aileron imput and just continue holding elevator to complete the turn. Then, when you're done turning, you will have to give opposit aileron to level the wings. You will also have to give the RIGHT AMOUNT of aileron, because it will tend to stay at whatever position you leave it at. Sweet!

Hi, I also went from an Eagle 2 to a Tiger 2 and was pretty aprehensive about the way she would fly. What a surprise it was, within 5 seconds after it left the ground I was real happy. She is very stable. great lift and settles in beautifuly on approach. I don't think I was ever able to set down any of my trainers as softly as the T2. All round really good plane, just watch those wing bolt down blocks. They can come loose pretty easily . The Os 46 is a great motor for it. You'll love it.

It is good to hear all of the good impressions of the transition from a trainer to a T2. I have been away from the hobby for a few years and have the bug again. I have a Tower Hobbies 60 trainer that flies like a dream and a T2 that I only have to cover the wing to finish. I have an OS 60 to drag it around with. I can't wait to get some more stick time on the trainer so I can move on to the T2. I have been playing around with the RealFlight Simm and have gotten pretty good on the computer. Does anyone know if this practice is going to help me or may make me to comfortable with a plane that may not react the same way my trainer does?

On a more interesting note I finished re-powering Eddie Weeks Fed-Ex DC-10 Jet with JetCat P-120's and delivered it to the lucky new owner Scott Foster at Superman 2002. It is kind of weird working with Eddie on jets when I still haven't mastered my trainer, but building is my passion. If anyone would like to see some good photo's of the DC-10's that Eddie built just shot me your address. They are really cool. The plane is 12 feet long with a 12 foot wing span. Well I have been dragging on. If anyone has any tips of the trade for transition to the Tiger 2, I would like to here them.

Hey dljolly: I too, live in Colo. Springs. Co. Listen to these guys. The tiger 2 was my second plane as well. Had a fox 50 in it for the first go round, flew well, until up, actually meant down. I rebuilt it and put a saito 91 in it, believe it or not it flew even better, the throttle transition was a lot more linear, and can you say vertical, sure I knew you could. Well it is on it's second demise now, but you can take it to the bank it will be rebuilt again. In the mean time I bought a used tiger 60 and put the Saito on it, and again, another plane I can't get enough of. But I must admit I like trike gear planes better, I don't break as many props, Where I fly is pretty rough. I also like the looks of trikes better. I can grease it in every time. Take the advise given in one of the previous replies about holding a couple clicks of throttle until you are almost to the runway then chop the throttle and watch it settle in. I like these planes so much I don't know if I will ever buy anything else. Always happy to help if I can. Garry

I am a fan of the Tigers too. I had a Skytiger, and Tiger 60. A lot of the guys at the field had Tiger IIs. I flew a few of them. Even the poorest built one would slow to a crawl, and stalls were either a slight nose down mush. or at worst a wing would drop a few degrees. The Skytiger was my 2nd plane after a glider. and the Tiger 60 was my first after returing from the service. I only had a .61 on it but it would turn and burn. (to a point anyway.) Great fun!!!! Just gotta watch them 4point rolls at 0 altitude.

I have found that their are two things to learn during the transition. Handling the yaw torque on take off, and handling cross winds on take off or landings. Other than that, don't worry, be happy!

Love the T2 so much that I decided to build another low wing- a4*40. Did the mods as outlined on Tom Pierce's web site. Put a TT pro 46 in it and took it out for the first time a couple of days ago. As nice as the T2 in all respects. As I sort of learned that you don't take two planes out to the field (OUCH), I am now going to have a hard time deciding whether to take the T2 or 4*. I'll just have to find more flying time.

Hey robbie: The Tiger 2 is made by Carl Goldberg which I believe has been sold to lanier rc. I just received my Tower talk yesterday and low and behold Tower is carrying goldberg kits again under the goldberg name, and they have a Tiger 2. Always ready to help if I can. Garry By the way $99.

If you can swing it get the .60 Tiger. The extra size is rather nice to have. I had a ST.61 on mine. Nothing overpowerfull, but it was still an extreamly fun plane,

What is the deal with the delux pnuematic retracs,,are they worth a hoot and how do they work I have 6 channel radios so retracs are no prob but the specs say it is a 4 channel kit??

I think the retracts are mainly for a coolness factor. You will not see much of a performance gain. They are air actuated retracts that would require a 5th channel. I have never used pneumatic retracts so I dont know much about them. The plain Tiger .60 kit would be the best route. At least in my opinion. I have a Zen 50 with retracts and 98% of the time I never raise the gear.

Default whole different set up

I started with a CG eagle 2 in 92, got out of it, for various reasons (not a particularly friendly field,((which by the way no longer exists))) anyhow this summer I see a GWS stick buy it and am now pretty good with it so I , decided to go back to glow only smaller, I got a Norvel .074 and an Ace simple Extra 230 , havent built it yet .. just my 2 cents, I can walk up to the school and fly the stick so I hate to take it apart to put the radio in the Ace, especially in the winter, maybe I should get a nice new radio!! say theres an Idea!!.Rog

DL,

I think you will be very happy with the Tiger II, I went from an CG Eagle to the Skytiger and everything everyone else said is spot on. The only thing I will add is that I found the Skytiger actually easier to land if there are any wind gusts. The wings don't seem to get tossed around as much which keeps the nerves a little calmer as well.

Have fun,

Default Tiger 2

I built a Tiger 2 this past winter. It was not my second (or even third) plane, but it was my first kit. I built it as a taildragger, and enlarged the control surfaces. It still flies like a low wing trainer when I want it to, but it can also push the envelope with hovering, high alpha rolls, torque rolls, etc. I agree with all that has been said here as far as flight characteristics go. I would also recommend the Tiger 2 if you would like to learn how to build. You can read more about it at http://www.angelfire.com/vt2/airwethead/tiger2.html
