Connery,
I've been watching this too, but I'm not sure we need to close it yet. If the discussion can stay civil then I'll leave it open, but if it heads back to where it was yesterday then I'll lock it up. Personal attacks will not be allowed here in the threads.

I would like to remind everybody of the RCU rules of posting (BTW, these rules are located above the reply box, so you should see them everytime you post in the threads)
Please resist the urge to curse, flame, degrade, insult or embarrass someone in your post. We encourage the free flow of your ideas, but believe that they can be communicated (and received) much more effectively if you keep things civil. If you have to vent, take it offline. We carefully monitor posts and will ban individuals who engage in offensive conduct within the forums. Thanks. (RCU Policies)
Everybody needs to play nicely toghether, otherwise I'll close the playground.

This thread seems to have lost focus.

I get the feeling the dude was just trying to show off his beautiful plane and sweet skills. Good job!

I know very little about Edmonton, but here is what google pulled up: "At 670 km, Edmonton is one of the largest cities in North America, by area — larger in area than Chicago, Philiadelphia, and detroit. However, Edmonton also has the one of the lowest population densities in North America — about 67 times less than New York."

While learning at a club is generally preferable for a bunch of reasons, it could probably be hard to find an instructor or a nearby club in rural Canada. The guy just wants to fly RC and he did it successfully. So much drama!

I agree with ya there SemperFitz, this thread has lost it's focus. But one thing I've learned at this website, if ya say you taught yourself how to fly, there will be a line of folks ready to 'flame' ya for it.
Again, nice job the your plane Glowfast.[8D]

I have absolutely no problems if you are expressing differing opinions, and it's good that you are passionate about your views. I'll let those be posted all day long. But there will not be any personal attacks. If we can discuss this issue without resorting to personal attacks then I'll leave this thread open. If not, then I'll lock it up and the party will be over.

Thanks for helping keep this discussion civil

Now I would have to say that was a tad uncalled for. I was under the impression that most of us in this thread are grown ups. Playground name calling over an opinion regarding Model Airplanes is really silly. I love a good arguement as much as the next guy, but please remember that we are not talking about World Changing events here. I form alot of my own opinions on things, but I don't expect everyone to see things exactly as I do. So as an adult I try to argue my opinion without being disrespectful of other opinions. After all, who designated me as the all knowing genious of Model Aviation?......................................nob ody did!

I just went thru this entire thread and could hardly believe what what some people were posting. The man SCRATCH built a real nice model airplane and when he finished it, he went out and flew it. He didn't cut his finger, go blind, hurt anyone else, or tear anything up, and from the looks of his model, it's still in one piece. It's apparent he didn't need an instructor nor a high dollar club. Great job Glowfast. Jim

I think everyone here is proud of what Glowfast has done. I think the main subject of this thread went bye bye many post ago. This conversation has moved way off of that topic and has just more or less turned into "I am smarter than you" kind of thread. No real subject matter. Just a pissing contest between a few who are legends in their own minds!

I personally feel that a person should get an instructor to learn to fly for two reasons. The first reason is safety. Before you learn to have control of an airplane it can spin around and go places that you can't imagine very quickly. The second reason is to save ones self alot of money. What I don't understand and may never understand is why people always have to throw in the occasional shot about maybe having to go to the hospital and all this garbage. The way some talk on here makes it seem that a person should NEVER eat alone(you could choke), never weed eat your yard alone, never mow your lawn alone, never walk down into your basement alone(you could fall down the stairs and who would be there to help you). The list could go on and on but the way some people make this hobby sound and the reasons they give are blasphemous. This hobby requires COMMON SENSE to stay safe. This is no more dangerous than ANYTHING else one does dozens of times a day.

This was a good post, - there are a lot of fearful, "what if " people around, and these nervous people are a danger to others, you can see it on the roads everyday, yet they still drive!

I would like to weigh in on this from the viewpoint of a beginner. I had my first flight today with an instructor and a buddy box and now I feel like I am qualified to give somewhat of an intelligent opinion. I was in a hurry to get in the air but I decided to take some old timers advice and go about it the right way. Flying an RC airplane is not easy. When that plane is 400 feet in the sky and moving at whatever speed it was going, it is hard to judge what the airplane is doing. not to mention when he gave me the control I was scared out of my mind. If I would have went it alone I am 100% sure my plane would be in pieces right now. I almost attempted to fly by myself and I am so glad I did not. take it from someone who knows now, join the AMA than join a club and get an instructer. not to mention there is so much valuable info to be gained by hanging around with the old timers who have been doing this for years. and most of these guys are more than willing to share tips and thier little secerts. Plus hanging out at the club is a great way to spend an afternoon with the people who share your passions. baby steps people... Rome was not built in a day. BTW I did not even attempt to take off or land today. I however spent a lot of time getting a feel for the plane on the ground. I did a bunch of practice take offs with out actually leaving the ground. (if that makes sense.) I know this seems boring but I really think it is the best way. Thanks also to all you people within this site. You guys are a pricless resource for a guy like me just trying to break into this wonderful hobby.

"Rural Canada" - LOL are any of you fellas also hockey fans? Wayne Gretzky " Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club" before the trade to LA Kings. The originator of this thread built a great easy flying design for a small field or park flyer model.

I'm getting back into the hobby after quite a couple of decades. I went to the local fields to get help and advice. Soloed on a Sig Kadet in 10 flights. Flight simulators, I have one now. The pc was just getting used by the University during my third year. It probably would have helped some of us. I seem to recall a sequence of build, fly, crash, rebuild, fly, crash, new kit, etc. It's still quite the hobby.

Dude....you don't know anyone involved in that accident that killed thousands where that guy with the rc plane lost control and flew into a commercial airliner who crashed into a nuclear power plant that blew a neighboring military arms installation?

Everyone blows the saftey thing out of proportion for no reason...worst case scenario all the time...these things arent that unsafe...if your dumb...yeah....you can get hurt... "You might hit someone" ... well...if something bad happens, yeah...maybe...but name someone...please...

Well said. Man you'd think we were going to fly nuclear powered craft or something.

Lighten up a little people. Jeez....

Tom
