Hey guys just getting back into the sport after being absent for a few years. I learned on a aircore trainer then moved up to a sig astro hog. The astro hog pretty much got destroyed in storage and getting moved and mishandled. A huge shame, it was an awesome plane. I was think about getting a aircore colt for my next plane since I want something durable till I get my feet wet. Its been about 8 years since I've flown. Anyways I was wondering if the os 70 4 stroke out of my astro hog would be to much for the colt. I want to stay with 4 stroke power. Watcha think? Thanks

I don,t think it would be too much at all, In fact if I were considering one that is an engine i would consider. The Aircores (both the trainer and the low wing) were quite popular some years back locally. i think the Colt was called something else then. Anyway trained a number of folks with them and on the low wings. 46's and a variety of four strokes up to .70 were used. Seems Aircore while never a popular airplane with the perception as a lead sled was anything but and both versions were fun to fly. They are quite effective for the intended purpose as primary trainer and the low wing as next step airplane. Some were using three blade propellors on the four strokes for ground clearance. I think that earliar low wing version may have had shorter main gear legs than the Colt but not sure.

Hey thanks alot thats good news. They arent the prettiest or lightest but man they can take punishment. The trainer I had was awesome to learn on. After I mastered it I converted it to a tail dragger. Also this engine hasnt been used for about 8 years, so I'm wondering how should I prep it to run again. Also I have the Futaba radio from the same era as the engine and was wondering if I should upgrade. It still works, but might need some new batteries for it. Thanks again.

Remove the rocker cover and back plate and check, clean and lube. Check the valves as they may be stuck with dried oil, replace the glow plug as they go off over time, run the first tank rich as if a new motor to lube every thing again. As for the radio an upgrade would be the better choice as radios nev come a long way in the last few years.
