hey skymortar,
I also just started and bought a ARF (Almost ready to Fly) trainer plane by thunder tiger, the Easy trainer 40. Im about 3/4 way through the build and there is more than I expected to put together. (Been building in free time on and off for about 5 days) I chose a larger engine ( the max possible for this plane) a O.S. 46 (7.45 CC) as this would be possible for later use in more advanced planes. As it is a trainer it does not appear 'Good looking' but is necessary to learn to fly. Should be enough to get you hooked from what I hear!

Any of the good (Name Brand) 40 size trainers with a good Ball Bearing 46 engine will give you an adrenalin rush that's 10 times better than your first Kiss.

10 times better than your first Kiss? I remember my first kiss, it was steam locomotives running head on into each other. OK, maybe 5 times better.

A good way to get hooked and possibly not spend a lot of time or money is to go to a local field and spend a little time with the folks just BS'n and seeing what's going on. You may even get lucky and find someone that will put you up on a buddy box for an introduction flight. I do it every now and then.
The good thing about doing this is that you will also see what the local club is using for radio's , planes etc. and possibly meet someone that will help you get started.
When you go to the field be a little agressive and find out what you want to know, don't be a pain in the ----- just a bit agressive. Take your time and get as much info as you can. ENJOY !!! RED

Another benefit of checking out the flying field first is purchasing a radio on a seldom used channel. I did and was able to purchase a radio on a channel no one else in the club has
