I'm ahead of you on that one. I started converting the build thread into a Word document almost as soon as found it.

Learning from other people's experiences has proven invaluable over the years. I discovered when learning to build model ships that even though I wasn't building the same boat, there was a lot I could learn from reading an advanced builder's log - technique, philosophy, methods, best practices, where to be especially careful, how to prioritize tool purchases, what works and what doesn't, just to name a few. I appreciate your views on the thread and I'm pleased to know that Ken is a respected builder. I'm looking forward to reading his thread.

By the way, this is the only really detailed build I have found so far, which kind of surprises me as there are so many model ship builds online. Not sure why but I guessing by the number of ARFs, RTFs, etc., on the market and how prominently they are featured in RC magazines that the trend in RC flying is moving in the ready-made direction (nothing wrong with that, not everyone's interested in building). Or maybe I'm just not looking in the right place.

Hi Stephen.  Why are you converting to word document?  I tried doing something similar so I could print out the most important parts but I failed miserably.  I'm no genius when it comes to computers?  Any chance I could get a copy off you when your done please?  Cheers.

I think the main reason you do not see build threads that go into the level of detail that Ken did with this one is because it is so much work. I bet doing the documentation more than tripled the amount of time it took to do the build.

I know that a build is not a race, and it takes as long as it takes, but a person truly has to make an investment to do a detailed build thread.

I have built only three kits. I planned to take pictures throughout the builds and post a few as I made progress but it did not happen. I had the camera in the airplane room, on a mini tripod, batteries charged, and almost never used it. I got pictures of a few steps and then it dwindled to nothing.

Tripled would have been an underestimate!!!!

It does add a lot of work to do a build thread such as this one. This was my first very detailed build thread and I approached it in a way that I won't do again. I've got a few new build threads planned that I'm going to be starting soon, and I will approach them differently in hopes that they will be more detailed and more complete than this thread was. The planes I'm planning on doing build threads on a Bruce Tharpe Venture 60, an Ultra Sport 60, and possibly a 4-Start 120 with a gasser engine on it.

I have published over 2500 pictures with supporting text during 9 build / rebuild  / repair threads. The most detailed is a Killer Chaos 60 (620 pics) that still needs covering. And those weren't really a true step by step 'cause you get "immersed" and all of a sudden you realize that "oops" - forgot to take some pics. Then there's the supporting text - arg. As a intermediate builder, I surprise myself how often I "change" my procedure between the right and left build because I learned something during the build of the right side. Or, maybe I just forgot

Not sure you read my mind, but a BT Venture 60 build thread would be awesome as i'm planning to build that one next.

I am converting the build posts of this thread to Word and possibly PDF so that I can print it off for my personal use as a guide if I decide to build the LT-40 and as an overall learning tool to model plane building. I'm removing all of the headers, signature blocks and text not directly related to the build to make the document as short as possible but leaving the photos and links in.

I don't mind sharing a copy with you or anyone else providing Ken is okay with that. After all, this is his work. I'll run it by Ken once it's done. It'll probably take me a couple of weeks to finish, there are a lot of posts in this thread.

I hadn't thought of that, but you are absolutely right, carrellh. Back in school, I did a presentation on designing cicular staircases. My prof asked if I would write it up so the school could keep a copy in the library. Well, flattery having the effect is does, I jumped at the opportunity. Little did Iknow how involved it would be . . .

It took a ton of time and I didn't have to build anything. It was all design theory. Plus, the audience would already be familiar with straight-run stair cases so I could leave out a lot of the detail that is included here.

So, hat's off to Ken. I know this a ton of work. I hope he realizes how much his efforts are appreciated.

Cheers Stephen.  That would be muchly appreciated.  Ken might even want to get a copy to attach to the build thread or something?  I don't mind following along with the build thread when I come to build my LT-40 but I would rather not have my laptop near the build.  I'd rather print it out on paper but when I printed the first page of posts a few weeks back, it took about 15-20 pages worth of printing.  Times that by 33 pages and that's a lot of wasted ink and paper!

Great Thread!

I had started one of these years ago and was about 80% done. At that point I had to move out of my apartment as the house was sold so a bunch of stuff went into storage. Well, someone broke into my storage unit and stole...you guessed it...the Kadet.

For my birthday my Mom isgetting me a new kit, so I will be starting again.

I guess the build coverage stopped around this post - http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_34...tm.htm#5599663 and that is unfortunate because if I recall correctly, the instructions had you cover the vertical fin, fuselage and stabilizer prior to gluing them all together. I was very curious how you went about covering after they were already attached as it seems a bit unwieldy. It also seems like it would be really easy to break the stabilizer and/or fin.

If you could provide any details, that would be great! Even just pictures would be super!


Stephen up North...if you do convert to a word doc I have a request. Could you paste the pictures within the text? In other words, when Ken says something like "As seen in Picture #1", could you past Pic 1 there? And then, can I get a copy?

Hey Stephen - the posts alone result in a 161 page pdf file (using Word as the text editor) without the pictures embedded and with table of contents and index). You might consider breaking it into "build segments" that result in smaller pieces-n-parts that can be more readily shared (with RCKen's permission, of course). Mine is for personal consumption so I haven't asked for permission - maybe I should ask for forgiveness

And there are 1585 pictures that take up over 200 Mb. Just bein' thorough ...

I might have missed it somewhere in here...but I just had a LT 40 given to me...wing is built, but nuthing else I have the manual but no plans...he said they got ruined and got tossed...where can I get a new set of plans or if anyone has an old set they are willing to part with ...
