Default Thoughts on the P-51 trainer

I'm just wondering where all the people that were getting the p-51 trainer have gone on the forum... it seemed like a bunch of people got them a month or so ago and I'd like to know what people think about the plane now that they've had a chance to fly them for a bit. Just wondering what people are thinking about it's flight/ ground characteristics. After 2 flights mine seems to fly and ground handle well. The only problem I can see so far is that it's kinda hard to get a great perception of it from a distance. In fact we almost lost it due to this when we thought the wrong wing was raised, which led to an inverted dive that the instructor pulled out of a few feet above the trees. A scary experience, but after that we didn't have any problems. So, those of you who have flown or have seen one flown, go ahead and tell me what you think. Thanks

Personally I like them. I've flown a few both with all the stuff on it and all the stuff off it and anywhere in-between.

I have also experinced the orientation issue with them so I had a few students add some 4" wide neon stripes to the bottom on the outer edges of the wings and this helped allot

I took mine up about 20 times and I think it's a good plane, of course I remove the speed breaks. and fly without the flaps other than on calm days I may use them, and about the orientation your right on I experience the same thing as you did, and I thought it was a goner , hard to tell if it went inverted or not from some distance, I hate to change the color scheme. mostly because it's not a big plane and too much the same colors. I don't know if I would call this one a first trainer, hard to tell since I started with a high wing. I would like to hear from someone who started flying with the P51 as a trainer.

Well I'm using it as a trainer... so I really hope that works out for me I'll keep you updated on my progress. I'm pretty patient so I think I'll be using an instructor for awhile though

I think the it's a great plane. I am still on the buddy box, but it has still been a lot of fun. I have progressed on it quite nicely I believe. According to my instructor, I will be flying solo as soon as this weekend. I have had flown the plane the last three Sundays with a total of 7 flights will be flying solo by this weekend maybe. What more could a man ask for. Granted I will not be an award winning 3D pilot, but I should at least be able to take off and land decently on my own. As far as the orientation issues, I haven't had the first bit of trouble. All I have is fun with this great plane, and I would highly recommend this plane to any newcomer.

Hello I was interseted in buying one of these planes. I am just wondering, the flaps come in 2 preset position right. Also they say u can buy an extra servo to move the flaps. Can u check if there is an extra channel on it so this cane be done. Thanks

stunner,

yes the radio is a 5 channel so you can use the flap servo with it.

i tend to agree with the people who are NOT having trouble seeing this plane. yes it is a bit smallish but you also dont need to fly it way out, we have been flying it almost like a park flyer ( BUT ITS NOT) we can keep it over the runway and fly nice slow patterns without ever having it get to far out and MY PLANE will not tip stall with the droops on, have taken it up high and slowed it to a crawl and it just slowly noses down then picks up speed and goes again all in all i like this plane. ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT MY FIRST PLANE OR 2ND OR 3RD I JUST WANTED TO SEE HOW IT FLEW, PLUS I LIKED THE LOOKS AND FLAPS IT HAD AS MOST .46 SIZE PLANES DONT HAVE THEM.

I have had mine for 2 months, it was my second plane I first took off the speed brakes then added a 2 blade 11/6 master airscrew prop and a pipe and flap servo, but left the droops. I have also came close to losing mine on several occasions. All in all I like mine especially after taking off the brakes it just makes it to slugish. I also really like the flaps.

Yes there is a extra channel for the flaps and the switch is located on top right hand side of the transmitter the receiver has one extra channel . the P 51 has two presets (off or on) and yes you can get a extra servo for the flaps,
I installed mine when I first got it. I use them sometime when there is no wind to slow it down when landing.

Where are all the people that were having problems with this plane? It seemed like there were a bunch that were down on it before... as far a ground handleing problems and in air problems. Did you guys figure out what was wrong with the planes, or did you just give up/crash? I'm just wondering because it's useful for me to know what problems people are having and their causes before I encounter them. Personally, I took it up for the first time last weekend and didn't taxi myself, but my intructor said that it handled fine on the ground, I'm hoping to get some taxi practicing in this weekend
