Simulator experience or even RC car experience helps a lot. Remember, you are not just learning to fly, you are also learning to operate something by remote control, a skill that is not natural.

Don't worry about what others think of your beginner skills, as your skills increase and you really start hot dogging, you will learn the cruel truth.....nobody pays any attention to your flying.

It sounds to me as though the consensus is :

1. Stick with the LT40
2. Consider a simulator instead of an electric pre-trainer
3. Don't worry about looking like a beginner. Everyone at the field was a beginner once.

And I would add this :

If you are worried about learning to start and operate a glow engine, don't worry. They are very simple machines. The manufacturing tolerances these days are fantastic. Buying a brand name engine like OS Max is like buying a Honda. They start easily and run reliably.

When I got my trainer I was afraid to start it. I had an os and it is the best engine Ive ever had the things are built like a rols royce.

Tigerdude, I too have seen some of your posts here in RCU and feel sympathetic. We've all been there in the beginners spot and it can be a little uncomfortable. I had a rough go of it at first (long story) but I did come across a great instructor and eventually learned to fly. The LT40 is a great trainer and if you build the kit, folks at the field will be so impressed it will help to mitagate beginner's nervousness! Besides, winter is fast approaching-time to build and then learn to fly in the spring. Good luck!
