I tend to use WD-40 for short term, and when I need to fog the engine, and machine oil for long term. Go with the machine oil.

WD40 dries out to quick, I use a mix of airtool oil and auto trans oil.

Cheers.

Be sure you get all of the leftover fuel out of the engine. I feel that it is the presence of methanol more than the absence of oil that rusts engine parts. I like to attach an aquarium air pump to the muffler pressure tap and plug the exhaust outlet. Then I find a crank position where all the ports are open and let the air purge out all remnants of unburned fuel that may still be in the engine. The air enters the exhaust port and exits through the carburator. On my four strokes, I attach the air pump to the crankcase vent and the air escapes through the front bearings and past the piston ring.

I was told by an old mechanic that wd 40 wa like 60 percent water when i was rebuilding my engine in my old car he said to just pore some 50 weight over it that would do better than wd 40.

WD-40 is probably not a good choice for an engine rebuild, but it's definitely NOT 60% water.

Hello; WD 40, means water displacer 40th attempt. What you want is to coat the corrosion prone parts with something that won't dry out or run off. WD 40 was never intended to do that. Air tool oil is what you want.
