Default newbie hello

Hello everyone.
I just joined and had to say hello.
I am new to R/C and pleased to find there are forums about the hobby. My concern is will this stay a hobby (laughing) as it looks to be too much fun really. Aww heck I always needed another day job anyway.
Howdy, Happy Holidays, and be warned... I found you!!

harlantk,

This is not a hobby, it is an addiction! It is a sick distorted view of life that will cost you millions in the long run. Take my advice... RUN! Quickly! Get out while you can before it's too late!

Your only other option is to go to your LHS (Local Hobby Shop) and meet the man you will be giving all of your money to for the rest of your life.

Welcome!

Hi harlantk, hate to inform you that you are now entering a new and better way of life, some people think this is a hobby! After a few flights, new club ,new flying buddies, half a dozen planes and radio's,you will look at home as a place to build and store planes, you'll wonder who the kids and wife are,a paycheck is just another r/c coupon,so be warned because it's a BLAST!!! AND WELCOME.

Welcome aboard!!!

I'm new myself but I can buy like a pro. I'm not sure that's a good thing either. But that's just me.....starving college student. I can only assume that most of the people here are well established "adults", where as I have to make a hard decision when it comes to eating or buying supplies. But No Worries.....Everyone here is very helpful and very very patient. Good Luck and have fun!!!

Whew!
And thanks for the warm welcome here. I did try and run, but ran in the wrong direction,(towards the bank) and tried to mortgage the wife and dog for parts to get started.... could only sell the son this time
It seems I am safe though, since there is "NO" LHS here Honestly I have to drive about an hour to get to our LHS and am searching for a local club here. I heard they have one too. Maybe I can even get a few tips and some lessons before I destroy too much in my path. (that would be a rare occurance)
It was your comment MinnFlier, that finally convinced me, ya hit too close to home of my brain cell patterns, <It is a sick distorted view of life that will cost you millions> and add to this TerrellFlyer's comment of <that you are now entering a new and better way of life> and I just gotta go for it meaning <<It is a sick distorted view of life now entering a new and better way of life>> YES!! that is for me
Good!
Now please forgive my humor tonight, I'm not usually this way, I am always worse. Thanks again MinnFlyer AceBird TerrellFlyer SigPiPup for the warnings and welcomes.
Back to building
Harlan

I don't know if I can say this but here goes: Those that think you need to sell the wife (good luck) and kids are from the old school. All you need is time. Take the time to LEARN how to build cheap and durable planes that you can make mistakes with. If you are going to buy and ARF buy only one. It is the second one after a crash that is expensive. The fist one bought you the radio gear, engine and most of the hardware to build the next durable plane.
The real economy comes when you build a gasoline bird all with the standard equipment that you salvaged from the ARF crash.
Box cardboard can get you there. Nothing else comes close.

Acebird:
I guess I should have placed a stronger warning on my sick humor attitude. I hear and understand what you are saying, and on a more serious line, is why I was delighted to find this forum. A little background here also. I have never built an R/C flyer, only had one cable control plane eons ago, still have my antique engines, McCoy .36 and McCoy .09, and really am a true green horn here. I was scavanging the internet and thought the best way to learn to fly would be to see how cheap I could build one of the SPAT planes, something I could learn to fly with without all the tears. Save my pennies, and plan ahead for a nice bird in the future. I really like the Piper Cherokee look. I love to build things, and semi-retiring from Lutherie, have many of the tools I will need, so can focus my play funds towards quality in this new hobby. I am currently making from scratch, a replica of the Kitty Hawk, where it all started. Totally from fir I am cutting to stock to make parts out of. The hard way to go, but then I see it as one great educational way to find my way into this. So seriously, not gonna sell the wife or kids, need her by to encourage me as I learn to fly, and excited she is about this adventure. THe kids are grown and gone, so that option was...well...
Anyway, my appologies if I touched on any sensative areas here, and I definetly need to work on the old school mentality
It actually took me a year to make the decision on what I would want for my serious hobby, a lot of thought. In that the thought continues as I am researching everything I can now, hopefully to avoid mistakes and such, from those who are willing to share that others may learn from them.
On a less serious note... "Yes officer, it just went out of control! Sorry bout your uniform, but can I get my plane back? "

Default newbie hello

Nawwww this isn't addictive or consuming at all ---- just don't take the wife out to where you may hide; I'm a newbie myself and in the past month I've only gotten a superstar 40 with a 40, two LT-40's , a Kadet Senior, and am working on a Sig*60 as we speak .... then of course the engine for the Sig*60 (an MDS .68) a Magnum 65 (yes 65) have a flight pack ordered for the Sig *60 and one of the LT-40's
and am on my second case of fuel ..... good thing my wife only flies a couple of times a week or she would be cutting into my stash of 15 %.
She did insist on having "her" own channel, so had to get a second radio, and with all the info here on RCU she found out about "mixing" so guess who got the new computer radio, yep!
Brought one of the grand sons out --- bad mistake this close to the holidays ..... ain't gonna bring him no more.
We are at a stand still now though --- I think the TT .46 should go into the LT-40 and she is thinking the Irvine .39 that was written up in the last Model Aviation would be better; what ya gonna do?
What a sport it is :-)
Well the glue on the outer edges of the Sig*60 should be about set, so back to work.
Have a good night to one and all.
