I also don't use any after run oil and have never had a problem. I didn't even know about it for many years so was simply not thinking of it as essential to engine care.

I'm going to start using after run oil, for the simple reason that it's winter and very cold. It can't hurt so why not. I find it much harder to turn over when it's that cold. So it may help, I guess starting the engine right away might not be a bad idea either.
