Default Han Solo School of flying please!!

Hey all Im brand new at the Rc Plane thing and almost find it frustrating, well in all honesty I just dont know the ends and outs of it like Rc Nitro trucks so a couple questions..First of all I buy a warbird for my first plane which I have been told first mistake, but I figure if Im gonna start out doing this why not, I mean I have messed around with more or less trainers at a point, I have been lucky to not completely bail my plane so it has no damage..I purchased a Watt-Age P51 Mustang..Flew once with no wind was simply flying but great, but seems to me any wind 5-10 miles it seem almost to hairy to go up in the ait and fly, I know my skills suck at this point but any Advise, is it just the matter of more practice or just not as easy in wind conditions...

Those little electric jobbies aren't going to fly in much wind at all. If you want to fly in some wind, you have to go bigger. At least 40 sized. Nitro, or big electric either one. I prefer nitro and gas, but to each his own.

BTW, before you dive into a big nitro powered plane, I suggest you get an instructor. Without it, your plane won't last long, and your hands might not either. It's a completely different animal from those wattage planes. Also, start with a trainer--not a warbird. If not, you don't even know the definition of frustrated...

If you are really dead set on getting a warbird take a look at this. But I agree with 2slow (and so will probbaly 90% of the people who reply to this thread) that you should find an instructor. An instructor can really help you learn the ins and outs without as much risk to your airplane.

Do it right... get an instructor and a proper trainer. This is, what, about the 15,000th "learn without an instructor" thread on RCU? And still, people insist on doing it because they think it will be easy. Just out of curiosity (not trying to be a smart butt, just genuinely curious), what made you think flying RC would be even remotely the same as driving an RC truck? In addition to that, why did you choose an underpowered, small electric Mustang instead of a trainer?

Maybe he's a noobie and didn't know any better? This could also be why he's wondering why that light plane is hard to fly in 5-10 mph winds. Cut the guy some slack. And yes I realize that just about every other thread on here is "I'm gonna learn without an instructor" but that doesn't mean we should just blow this guy off.

By the way it appears there are a number of clubs in your area. Any of these should have an instructor that can help you learn. Also I think Bubbagates is from this area... maybe he can help you out with some more info!

Interesting, while all of the above" getting an instructor" is sound advice, not one mention of the AMA. A must if you intend to learn to fly. I don't know of any clubs, around here that will let you guest fly even with an instructor without at least being a member of the AMA. Just food for thought.

I think if you'll re-read your own thread, you will find that Parrot made no mention of the fact that you ran Rc Trucks or being irritated by it or your questions. In fact he went to great lengths to look up all the clubs in your area where you will find new friends that will be mor than happy to teach you how to fly the right way. He even put up a link for you to a Warbird that you can use as a Trainer. Now that everyone is starting to get down off their soapboxes & give the H9 P-51 PTS a chance they're finding it is a pretty good plane, & that yes they can train a newbie on it. It's really starting to get some pretty good reviews.

It was actually Lowlevl that asked you about the transition from trucks to Planes, & he clearly stated that it was not his intent to give you a hard time bust just genuinely interested in your comment that lead to the assumption that maybe you thought since you did Trucks you could do planes too. Planes a whole nother animal and you can do planes too, but it certainly won't be as easy as your Trucks were.

And you are right, you have to start somewhere, & now that you've landed at the top of the "Rc Food-Chain" Welcome & good luck!

If you insist on no instructor, get Real Flight, and get VERY good at it. I mean REAL good at it. Then when you go to the field and take off, you will realize that the SIM doesn't feel like the real thing [X(]

You will have all the basic skills, but executing them on a live bird is quite different. You will freeze, go left when you wanted right, and there is no red RESET button on the controller.

My point, get an instructor.

PS, not putting down the sims, just don't believe they are the same as an instructor.

Good point gforeman. While I like my sim & did eventually learn to fly with it, it has no "pucker factor" a crash on the sim doesn't require a $400 trip to the LHS. Just a click on the spacebar & you're brand new again!

I only just got G3 about 2 weeks ago. I've been flying RC for about 6 years. When I started flying on the sim, my friend was watching and pretty much decided I was terrible at RC. Flying in real life and the sim are two completely different experiences, but it does teach you which way to move your fingers! Right now i'm trying to get the "feel" for rolling circles, get my fingers used to working that pattern. That's what the sim is good for, training your fingers, not nessecarily you!

And Mark, I'll hopefully be at the field next week, so I'll prolly run into him!

Yep I'm very close to him and am more than willing to help him out. The search you did does show our club (Keystone Radio Control Society). We are over by TMI. The contact info should have been changed to me but I see the AMA has not done it yet.

heartofmadnes,

Send me a PM with a way to contact you. I'll be more than happy to get you some stick time and if I have to pull out my Four Star then so be it.

We actually have a flight test built around ParkFlyers.

Strange question, does anyone know the pinion size on the parkzone P51 mustang 480 motor is it 12 or 13 tooth..I have another 480 but its a lower turn for more power. But I misplaced my original motor so cant count the teeth on the pinion for now...

Here are the specs from the web site. The gearbox/propshaft should be stamped what it is. Since the ratio states 3:1 it would be easy to figure out.

Wing Span: 39.5 in / 1000mm
Overall Length: 34.0 in / 860mm
Flying Weight: 29.0 oz / 820g
Motor Size: 480 power with gearbox
Radio: Proportional 3-channel FM
Servos: Two removable 5 wire servos that along with Rx, can be used in other speed 370 or 480-class electric aircraft
Trim Scheme Colors: Silver fuselage with black and white invasion stripes, olive drab wing top and silver wing bottom
Prop Size: 10 x 8
Speed Control: Power FET proportional ESC/receiver
Recommended Battery: 9-cell 10.8V 1000mAh Ni-MH
Aileron: Proportional
Elevator: Proportional
Throttle: Proportional
Approx. Flying Duration: 15 minutes
Approx. Assembly Time: 10-15 minutes
Gear Ratio: 3:1
Transmitter Range: 2500 feet (762m)
Available Frequencies: 6 frequencies on 27MHz
X-Port: Equipped with X-Port connector, but there's no external port, so minor modifications will need to be made to the fuselage. We will have information up on the web soon about how to do this.
Charger: Variable rate DC peak - charges 5-10 cell Ni-MH batteries
Landing Gear: No
