Default alierons to flaperons ?

Has anyone out there converted the alierons on a Hobbistar 60 to flaperons ? If so do they make a kit ? Do you make a bigger servo tray on the wing to hold the other servo ? Is it somthing a newbie could do ? Will two servos fit side by side in the fuse ? I know I will need a computer radio. Any suggestions will help. I sure would like air brakes but the plane won't get up with an anchor on board. Thanks

You really don't need airbrakes, you should learn to control your airspeed with your elevator. It's possible to land that plane at nearly walking speed in a dead calm, and have a rollout of less than 50feet on grass, maybe less (though coming in a hair faster and using, say 100-150ft of runway is easier and less likely to be a belly-flop). If you're coming in hot all the time, then you are probably diving to the deck and not throttleing down soon enough.

That said, usually when you do the flaperon conversion you put the ailerons out in the wing pannels. It's not hard, you just cut a hole in the covering, build in some servo mounts, re-cover, and do the pushrods and control horns. It's a good way to learn some basic building skills, though building a kit is probably better, since you don't have to engineer anything. I did see someone do the flaperon thing using two microservos in the same servo hole opening. You'll have to measure your fuse to see if all fits with 2 standard servos, but since the elevator and rudder servos are usually side-by-side, I'll be surprised if it doesn't.

If you really can't keep the nose up in the flair, then either increase the elevator throw a bit or move the CG back a little. Most trainers fly a heck of a lot better with the CG moved a little back from where the instructions say.

He meant to say to put the aileron SERVOS out in the wing panels. You may have realized that but I wanted to make sure.

The standard servo I'm using has 40 oz inches of torque. It's controling both ailerons. Would two micro servos with 22 oz inches of torque be heavy enough to do the same task ? Two micros would fit in the tray attached to the wing with very little modification

DOH! thanks Bruce. Yes, the SERVOs go out in the wing pannels. Ideally at about mid-aileron. But it's not really critical, esp for a trainer.

If you use micros, be sure to use metal gears. Nylon gears in a micro case won't be strong enough to withstand the forces on even a single aileron and will strip.

And no, I wouldn't use 20in/oz servos, I'd use at least something in the 35-40 range. Technically you might not need it, but the size of the various servos I've seen work out that going smaller than a Hitec HS-81 is going to be too small for the beating the servo will take from the size and speed of a .40 size glow trainer.

It might take a little cutting and glueing but there should be enough room to mount 2 servos side by side on that planes wing, then you just have to add an extra control rod and hook it up the way your radio manual says to for flaperons. But like said before, that plane shouldn't need them unless you just want someting else to play with and go wrong. ENJOY !!! RED
