Does anyone know what temperatures a run of the mill heat gun used to shrink Monokote, Ultracote, etc. achieves at the nozzle? I ran across a commercial heat gun for such things that has two settings, the lower in the 650 degree range and the higher in the 1000 degree range. It sells for $15.90 and looks very similar to our guns. I was just wondering what kinds of temperatures our guns achieve. Thanks, folks

p.s. This is a NIB gun.

Jollypopper,
Those types of "commecial" heat guns get way too hot for out applications. The heat guns that we use for shrinking covering will run ~400°. While you could use a gun like you mentioned it would more than likely be more trouble than it's worth because it would be too easy to burn or melt the covering material. It $15.90 it's not much of a bargain either because you can get a Hobbico heat gun at Tower Hobbies for $11.99. [link]http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJD39&P=ML[/link]

That confirms pretty much what I was thinking but just wanted to check. I have a Hobbico gun, but it does not seem to get to the temperature that is necessary to shrink some films. I have never, for instance, been able to burn a hole in MonoKote, no matter how long I hold the gun on it, and as a result, I don't shrink the film as much as I would like to. Fortunately, about 95% of what I do is done with an iron, so the gun is really a non-issue. Thanks for the input.
