A} Tigerdude wouldn't be the first person to build and not fly! There's one member of our club that I've never met. I hear he builds some really beautiful stuff though.

B} Tigerdude, I wonder why you are limiting yourself to trainers? If it's because they're familiar, you're in a rut. If you're scared, there's sport aircraft that are just as easy to build. If I was a therapist, I'd be alot thinner. Seriously, can I talk you into some variety? Oh, I know! You could grab a pencil and paper and design your own trainer! You got alot of empirical data to draw from with three completed airplanes in front of you.

Bruce, I know Piper Chuck from a couple of fly-ins we've attended. He is thoroughly deserving of being picked on. He shows up to a 1/2a fly-in with nothing but .15 sized airplanes!!! (that's about the worst I can say about him, but I could make something up)
A] It's just i love building so much I can never have enough to build.

B] I am only limiting myself to trainers cause it's the only thing I know how to build.
Wouldn't really say I was scared to do it (although that is a small part of it but I would say verrrry nervous. And also don't know how to go about finding someone to teach me - I don't know where to look for a instructor; I haven't seen or spoken to my father in years (personal problems) [] and that is really bothering because he has been building and flying for over 20 years, but I don't know how to approach him; I do have someone who says he can teach me but he wants $10 an hour and says it won't take long before I can solo with him teaching.

Right now I am thinking maybe the Senorita, but I am still investigating.

Original from RCKen. . . If you want a kit that is a true pleasure to build, and fantastic fun to fly, get a Sig Something Extra. I've built three of them and the last one I was able to frame up in a weekend. There's a joke out there about the SSE that all you do is open the box, through in a bottle of glue, shake, and remove the finished plane!!!
Ken, do you think I am ready for a build like that? I have seen threads on them and they look really nice. But maybe it is time for me to build something higher up in the ranks while I learn to fly the 3 trainers, which will be coming next month if my nerves will calm down some thinking about that.

ORIGINAL: bruce88123

I think you should try flying SOMETHING!!!!!!! I've seen so many build threads and no flying threads Tiger. When are you going to fly something? Time to get to it and go to the field and do it. IMO
I think you are correct bruce, but I am nervous and a little scared I guess. But I am also very anxious, but need instructor - I may end up paying my LHS the $10/hr to learn.

Sorry about the build threads and no fly threads (there is nothing more I'd like to show than my finished project flying successfully, but I'm afraid of the crashing part)

When I get another project going I don't think I will be doing a thread on it with the possibility of boring some members.

Til next time. ~ Steve

Steve,
First of, on your father. This is coming from someone older (I'm 41, so not too old). But it also comes from somebody who's father died 10 years ago. Yes, I was only 31 when my father died.

but I don't know how to approach him
Try this one on for size. Ring ring (picture a phone ring here!!!). "hello". Hi dad, it's me. How're you doing son??? Hey dad, I got a question for you. Can you teach me to build a plane?? Or fly a plane???

It really is that simple

I know this is going to sound corny, but whatever personal problems you think you have with your dad you need to just throw in the damn garbage can. Because I can tell you this much, there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about my dad and miss him. And we were close!!! So whatever problems you have don't amount to much when you realize that he could be gone tomorrow and then you'll sit around wishing you had been closer. Trust me on this one.

Ok, I'll quit preaching now.

Ken, do you think I am ready for a build like that?
As far as building other planes besides trainers. Just build them. Most of the techniques that you use to build a trainer are used for just about every other kit out there. Just because it's a trainer type airplane doesn't mean that they made the building any easier!!! In fact, I've seen trainers that are harder to build than some of the more aerobatic kits. And speaking from lots of experience, the Something Extra IS easier to build than a trainer is.

Hope this helps

Ken

Not older really, I turned 41 myself April 26. Really sorry to hear of your father, Best Wishes to you. I was very close to my father before the problem started so it is still possible it can be patched. The two of us built my first plane together (Sig Kadet Mark II) when I was 18, and although it was never flown it was one of the best times of my life, and although I had to give the hobby up since just recently, I would like to get him involved with my hobby again, will see what I can do.

Do they sell the Something Extra as a package (engine and kit) reasonable?

Hope this helps

Tigerdude,
Unfortunately they don't put it out in a "package". Here is what is required to complete the kit, this is taken directly from Tower's website

Engine: .40-.46 (2-Stroke)(with bearings) or .56-.65 (4-Stroke)
Radio: 4 Channel
Servos: 5 Standard
Servo Extensions 6": 2 (ailerons)
Covering: Two 6' Rolls and Paint to match
Misc. Items: 2-1/4" Spinner, Two 2-3/4" Main Wheels, One 1" Tailwheel
Propeller, 8 oz Fuel Tank, Fuel Tubing, Building and Field
Equipment.
The LT-40 kit is a rather odd duck in the hobby in that it came with everything you needed with the exception of the engine and the radio. Very few kits are that complete. The biggest reason for that is that most kit builders will have their own preferences of what types of wheels, spinners, fuel tank, etc. that they want to use. With the ease of Tower's website though you can have it all come to you in one very complete package.

There are plenty of people out there that will give you all kinds of recommendations on what type of engine to use in this plane ranging from a bare bones 40 all the way up to a Chevy Small Block. But my choice would be the OS 46 AX (I actually use the FX in mine, but those aren't available any longer). It is plenty of motor for the plane to fly with. No, it won't "3D", but this plane really isn't designed for that anyway.

Hope this helps

Ken

Tiger- Check out this club. I know money is tight but $40 membership, $15 initiation and the AMA and you can be a member.

http://www.berkshirerc.com/index.html

And it's right there in Pittsfield with you.

Training should be free, it is at most clubs, and that will cover the cost of membership and provide you with a lot of flying buddies.

Check them out.

I am checking out that site and am very interested. Going to look further into this club and would love to join.

Any info on how clubs operate and some of the club rules would be great. I was only a child when my father was in his group so was too young to learn anything.

I believe my decision has been made. While I will be learning on my trainers (very soon by-the-way) I will be getting into a more advanced build. I have chosen the Great Planes T-Craft 20 Kit .20-.32,56"
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...I=GPMA0155&P=K

unless someone has a reason to reconsider this decision. At 1st I considered a Piper Cub but I do not think I am ready for all that complicated building methods. The T-craft seems a bit more sophisticated than a trainer, yet not as complicated as a Cub.

I know I will probably need help in certain areas, but I don’t know if my fellow members here would be interested in another complete build thread from me. Maybe I should only post if I have problems. What do you think?

Thank you for all input, I really appreciate it.

Anyone have input on this model?

If you like building so much try the Goldberg Piper Cub or the Sig Astro Hog.

These are their basic club rules.
http://www.berkshirerc.com/files/bcrules.pdf
Flying area appears small to me and looks like no flying on Sun afternoons probably due to nearby church or something.

May want to check on other clubs too. But at least go and talk to these people and find out what is going on. These rules may be out of date or incomplete. Some of the members may know of another nearby field also.
