Default New guy with questions

Hello all,
I'm a new guy to RC and have a few questions.

1- I'm looking at buying a Lanier Explorer 40,or a Hobbico Superstar Select. What would be the better one,or is there better one that i need to be looking at?

2-As far as motors, what would be better Ball Bearing( Super tiger,GMS ),or Bronze Bushing( OS),or is there a better one out there?

Thanks for your help.

A good first step would be to contact a nearby RC club and talk to their instructors about getting started
Put in your zip code or city/state on this page and see if there are any clubs within 25 miles or so
http://www.ama-dist-8.org/Clubs/Locator.php
Some clubs have trainer planes that you can use until you solo. Others require you to have your own plane.

There's a club in Helena

As Carrellh said, Step 1. Contact a local club.

Trying to teach yourself to fly has a very steep learning curve and can get quite expensive very quickly.

As for your questions.
See what the instructor at your club suggests. FWIW - MOST trainers fly pretty much the same.

As for an engine, I suggest a ball bearing 46 engine. The difference in cost between a bushed engine and a ball bearing engine is not that great, however, the ball bearing engine is going to provide almost twice the power of a bushed engine. In addition, the ball bearing engine will definitely be useable for your 2nd (or more) plane where the bushed bearing engine normally doesn't have enough power for anything but a trainer.

As for brands of engines..... From personal experience I can highly recommend (not in any particular order) OS 46 FX/AX, Thunder Tiger Pro, Evolution 46 NT. These engines are very user friendly. By user friendly I mean than 99%+ of them are going to run great right out of the box with little or no "fiddeling" needed to run well. These are ABC type engines so the breakin time will be minimal before you can go fly.

A tip for you....while you are learning, use a Master Airscrew prop (the black ones ). They are a lot more tolerant of prop strikes than other brands.

OS 46 FX/AX, Thunder Tiger Pro, Evolution 46 NT.

Also from personal experience, I can add the Webra Speed and Super Tigre.

If you're looking for an ARF trainer, look at the Sig Kadet, too.

I will second the SIG Kadet Senior, what a wonderfull plane to fly.
Thunder Tigre Pro .46 engine runs like a dream with plenty of power to spare.
Master Airscrew prop has had 3 ground strikes (due to wind gust when sitting on the runway) with no damage whatsoever (Did scare the heck out of a family of moles nearby )
I will also reiterate, get with a local club and get a qualified instructor to help you along, you won't be sorry you did.

I like the hobbico avastar select. It is a good trainer and as your flying skills improve the plane can and will make a good 2th plane. I still fly my avastar select after 7 years in this hobby. It will almost knife edge . It will hover in 3D with a 12-4 prop. Flat spin and waterfalls too. Best of all it comes ready to fly......for about $350.00 All you need is fuel and a glow stick... Avastar Select has a semetrical airfoil. Most trainers are flat bottom which mean that don't like flying inverted. I have 36 planes and my avastar always go to the field every time I do...

Where can you get aileron controls? Your plane either has them or it doesn't. You just don't "get" aileron controls.

What you need, I think from the vague description, is a 12" or so piece of 2-56 threaded pushrods
