All,

Looks like I'll be moving to Northern Va. in the early summer.

Like to get a jump on the local flying clubs...

Suggestions (other than look for them on RC Airport :-) )

Depends on where in No Va.
NVRC is in Arcola on Route 50 however development is closing in on the site. http://www.1nvrc.com/

In Faquier county is the FARM club in Bealeton at a private estate and hosts an early IMAC contest CD by Don Szczur (of TOC competetion and pattern)

Some are crossing the Potomac north on 15 to http://www.frederickmodelaircraftclub.org/
in MD

There are several other clubs including one that does a lot of electrics just south of Leesburg just off 15

www.lcaa.org

We meet in Reston and our flying field is near Leesburg. We have a grass strip. Good club, we have about 90 members.

Default Where in NOVA

Depends a lot on the mortgage we can qualify for :-).

But we're thinking somewhere in the Herndon, Leesburg, Chantilly triangle.

Pick the one closest to your job...commuting can be a bear.

BTW...The NVRC club is closest to Chantilly, and it's bigger than than LCAA.

Default Opinions

I don't wish to start a war, but I'd also like any opinions regarding the clubs.

I've been flying since March and am working on a 4*60 to go with my LT-40.

I think of flying as recreation.

I don't mind rules, but don't want a club that goes overboard with them.

I would also prefer one that isn't super crowded.

Thanks,

GB

I can't give you an opinion on NVRC since I'm not a member of their club, I'm a member of the LCAA club.

I can say that we have a good bunch of folks (mostly guys) in LCAA who are conscientious, and are committed to having a safely run field that everyone can enjoy using...not to mention the camaraderie.

To find out more, I suggest you contact the club secretaries or presidents whom I'm sure will be glad to share any info you want.

I'm a member of NVRC. The flying site is most convenient for me (I live in Reston). It's a quality field, but there are trees on all sides. There are no noise restrictions, so you see lots of big gassers there.

Someone mentioned earlier that development is closing in. I expect the filed to be closed in the next 12 to 24 months (even that could be optimistic). It's a shame, it's been there since the late '60s. Unfortunately, that's the reality all around the DC metro area. Suburban sprawl in overdrive. That leaves sanctioned fileds in Loudon, Frederick and Faquier Counties. All of these are a real haul for me.
