I'm real new to RC flying, and I am looking for a BIG flying field in the Upland/Pomona California area. Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks.

Welcome to the world or rc airplane. There is no more rc airplane club in the Pomona/Upland area. Do you know Ontario Mills mall? well, that used to be a rc airplane club. However, there is still one in Chino. Go south on Euclid, pass Chino airport, I have been there only once, I can't remember exactly the way right now, but it is somewhere among the cows. I'll look up the direction and let you know.

It cost $100 to start there, and $75 thereafter. I live in El Monte. Fortunately for me, there are 2 clubs less than 5 miles near by. One in Whitter Narrows (strickly enforced public field with optional donation) just off of the 60 freeway on Rosemead. The other one is in Santa Fe damp area where the 210 and the 605 meet. At Santa Fe damp, you can fly float planes as well. Initial memebership is $100 and $80 thereafter.

No kidding !! I recall that there used to be a racetrack where Ontairo Mills is. Anyway, I work right down the street from the Whittier Narrows park. What do you mean by "strictly enforced"? Does it cost anything? I may have to stuff my plane in the trunk and go over there after work. Thanks.

Ontario Motor Speedway was on Haven, 1 mile west of the Ontario Mills site (Milliken Ave.).

mccabejc, I live in Alta Loma and fly with the Corona RC Club. Our field is located off of the 15 fwy and 6th Street in the Norco area. Its about a 30 min. drive from you. It has the best people of all the clubs around. If you have any questions let me know.

Yup, there is still a racetrack there. the small rc airplance club used to be in the area also.

And no, membership is not required to fly at Whitter Narrows. However, you should come on Sat, or Tue, or Thurs and ask for Kent Mead. He is the coordinator and trainer of the club. He'd trained me years ago. If fly there every weekend or whenver I am sick of work! We have a paved 700' runway there. Unfortunately, it is located next to a riffle range, which you are not allow to fly over. The rule is strictly enforce by park police. Once in a while some unfortunate guys get $270 tickets for flying over the riffle range. I crashed over there once but the coordinator over there were nice enough to let me pick up the plane without reporting me to the park police.

Parking is free if you show your frequency badge. You need to see Kent Mead to get the frequency badge. Membership is optional. However, it would be nice if you donate once in a while so we can maintain our nicely paved runway.

Thanks LQUAN. Isn't the rifle range across the freeway?

No, the riffle range is about 70 paces inline with the runway. When in the park it just sounds like gun shots echo from across the freeway. It can be a challenge for beginers who needs a good distance to practice lining up with the runway for landing. There is a cinderblock wall with fences on top that seperate the rc field and the riffle range, if you are not careful and keep your eyes peel, you can hit the fence. You almost need to make a 45deg turn and dive the catch the 700' runway or overshoot. But don't worry too much most people don't have any problem with the limitations. You can view the arial map at www.sgvrcl.org.

Default Across the freeway...

mccabejc,

I believe you're thinking of the skeet shooting range. It is on the south side of the 60 across from the flying field.
