First plane
Any recomendations? I don't want to spend much.
I have a 4 channel radio.
As I want to keep costs very low, I don't want to go brushless or Li-Poly. Can a powered glider be used not on slopes?

Yes, and a powered glider is an excellent idea for a first plane--something like the Goldberg Electra or Great Planes Spectra(?). They come with a basic motor, but no radio. You will need at least one 1200-1700-Mah NiCad battery, and some way to charge it. You can fly it at your local flying field, or really any wide open flat area (as long as safety and interference issues are satisfied).

That plane looks absolutly perfect. It is bang on my budget, not lipo or brushless, and comes with ESC and motor! It is perfect.
However, I live in the UK, and it would cost $34 to get it to me. That stopps it being so cheap. Does anyone know of something like this that is available in the UK?

Andrew, look at this site in London, 308hobbies.com, and then click on gliders. There is a beauty i think you might like in there called a Cermark Dragonfly . Check it out , It may be what you want

Looks fantastic! I think I'll get that one.
However, it comes with one battery. I have found a company that sells 14 1300mah, MiMH AA pencells for £15.50. Would AA cells be too heavy for this plane?
Alternativly, the same company sells 14 700mah NiCd AA pencells for £5.30. Are nicads cheaper? I know Li-poly are the best, but at the moment, I don't want to spend that much. I may go li-poly later.
In both cases, I would make 2 packs of 7 cells. (But apparently the plane is slightly underpowered. Would 8 cells be too heavy?
