WM Ultimate 40S - Good 3rd Airplane?

Well lets take a look at this for a sec.
We have one person in Ca, another in OK, 2 in PA and one in NC
For Marks benefit, OK would be in the middle at Ken's flying field but if we show up there, I'm gonna have to work very hard to keep Ken from sneaking off with my Ultimate. Now if us east coast folks want to get together we can decide based on the flying fields
Mine is 600 x 100 with about 10 acres of flying space. We do have interference every now. It's easy to deal with so long as you stay away from certain area's. There will be a new one at the end of the month that is the same size but about 40 acres of flying space and no interference issues

Personally I love Pa. Especially the area along the river up by Beaver Falls, Aliquippa, & New Brighton, but did they ever fix all those potholes yet??[:@]
By the way Bill, after I beat this pesky little cancer thing, I really could go meet you guys somewhere for a fly in. But it would probably have to be at least 4 to 6 months down the road for me which would bring us back into winter time back there. Maybe in the spring though if y'all seriously want to plan something. I'd love to come!!

Fix the potholes in the "burgh" area..lolol..i like your sense of humor. Pittsburgh with no potholes is about as easy as peace in the middle east. The Beaver valley area is about 45 minutes from where I live...some great H.S. football there
I do like the idea of an all ultimate or cap flyin...would be very cool

Maybe I should have PIF pay for all of us to go out to CA so Mark doesn't have to make the trip. Wouldn't that be cool...
Yep, burgh_guy61 got it right, we do not have potholes, we have bomb craters out here. I could hover my heli down into one for you and it would be like flying a real heli down into a volcano.
I am all for a fly-in guys. I could talk to the owners of the new field and see if they would be willing to host one and I'll bet they would as they are trying to get into hosting GS planes and IMAC contests. I know my current club would easily do that but with the interference issues we see at times it's not worth everyone risking their planes.
I'm gonna pop over to the big GP Ultimate thread and also the "getting larger" Gp Cap thread, both of which I am a part of and see what they all think

Ken,
I do not think it really changed. Bipe fly-in is just fine with me. Caps are welcome too.
Speaking if which, have any of you been over to QQ's web site lately. He has a Pitts Python he is doing and it's BIG....

Sorry, i did not mean to limit it Ken...fingers sometimes just go off typing with no fore thought. Bipes n Caps over "insert field or club here" sounds fun....but what flyin isnt fun
I love those larger planes but with my car, I am so limited to size..lol..picture a 96 cutlass with 3 planes coming out of it, plus field box, Xmitter case...it is a riot, but i do it.

A bi-plane fly-in would be just the incentive I need to finish mine. I've had the GP- Ultimate 40 ready to cover for 4 months now. I need to get back to it and finish it off

Well, I've checked with my local LHS and they can order up the WM Ultimate 40S for me and it could be here by the end of next week. However, I still haven't seen anything on whether the Yellow one is harder to see on cloudy days... Hopefully someone can answer that this evening. If not then I'll probably end up getting a Purple one, since so many of you have that one already.
Also, thanks for the info on the wing servo orientation not mattering but should I getting a stronger (more Torque) servo for the aileron? I was planning on using Futaba S3004 servos in this plane or should I consider another model?
Thanks,
Mark

Futaba 3004s are plenty, they will work just fine. We have 3004s & 3003s in ours. Any stantard size servos will be plenty sufficient for this model, it's just a little booger. You won't need any high-torque/speed servos for this one. You'll be just fine with the equipment you've listed from servos to engine & prop, it will all work very well in this plane. Just take your time when you're setting up your control surfaces & get them as close to perfectly neutral & centered out as you can mechanicly & you won't have much trimming to do if you get it right to start with. The other thing is we mounted the battery & receiver all the way up front along side the fuel tank (you'll see the compartment when you get the model) & she balanced just right like that with no added weight. So go ahead & have a ball with it.

One last thing.... how many of you guys 'seal' the hinge-lines on your planes? As in use covering to seal one side of the control surface? My father is an old-time flyer and kept mentioning that it would greatly improve my airplanes performance. However, when I did this to my SS nothing really changed; maybe a click or two adjustment to the sub-trim but that was it. So when I'm building this should plane, do you guys recommend that I do this to the Ultimate?
Thanks for your thoughts,
Mark

I am sorry, I did want to respond to the yelloe question before but I got og on another tangent
I find Yellow to be very easy to see in all conditions. My 4*60 is yellow with neon orange stripes on the bottom of the wing wich show up very well.
I also seal all of my hinges. I have been doing this since I had heard about it. I will say that I have not done the 4* and do not intend to but everything else is done. You can easily see the difference. Fly a few times before sealing them and then after you will notice you need to change trims and the plane just seems to respond better

Now here's another question... as I plan to start entering IMAC competitions, should I put a smoke unit on this? BTW, I just want to do IMAC so that it will improve my flying skills quicker. I think it will give me something to work towards thus forcing me to improve my flying abilities. Anybody else ever done this?
Thanks,
Mark

Ok, Now I think it's time to burst your bubble a bit. Sorry but as fun & great as this little plane is, I think you will find it very difficult to find the room in this little fuse for a smoke system. If IMAC is your intent you might really want to think about a bigger plane. I really don't see many bipes doing IMAC though. Mostly Extras, Yaks & Giles. WM also puts out some pretty nice Extras that might be better suited for trying your hand at IMAC. The WM Ultimate 40 is really just a little wring it out fun plane IMO. I mean they will let you do it, but your gonna be the only little plane in a field of 28%ers or better for the most part. At least that is what the field was at the only IMAC competition that I have attended, with one 90 size brushless electric plane & it looked tiny compared to the rest of them. Good luck with what ever you decide.

Thanks... maybe this could be the plane that I get that'll be much more agile than my SS and could lead me into the CAP 232 that I recently bought; maybe eve into, as you suggested a larger Extra or Edge 540. Hopefully, this plane will improve my skills enough to give me the confidence to go up to something bigger. I just don't want to be the guy that moves up in planes quicker than his skills will allow. Unfortunately, I have recently witnessed what happens in that case... kinda expensive lessons
Thanks,
Mark

Yes it will be good for those things. I just don't think it is an IMAC plane. I know all too well about advancing too fast, I am that guy![&:]

Gentlemen,
I have finally begun to build my Ultimate 40S and I plan on mounting my OS .46AX sideways as some of you have posted. I’ll be using a Slimline Side-Mount Pitts muffler and was curious as to some of you have routed your throttle connection to the motor.
As always, I appreciate everyone’s help ands I look forward to seeing your planes.
Thanks,
Mark

Congrats on your purchace. If you look back to the first page you will see I am the guy that had a WM Ultimate 40s built but never flown. Well I have since flown it and I have a sideways mounted OS .50-sx on the nose with the pitts style slimline muffler and it is swinging a 13x4 APC... way to much engine for this plane... I love it!
Your .46 will be ideal. I had to mount my battery in the fusalage behind the wing for ballance. As far as the throttle linkage I just set up my motor mount to the firewall and did one of those, "that looks about right" marks and drilled the hole. It works great. This bipe hauls tail feathers and does a blinding snap roll. It will land at a reasonable speed but I recomend use of exponential on the elevator so it is not to pitch sensitive on aproach... my maiden flight looked like a roller coaster ride.

Hello guys,
I saw this plane yesterday and I almost got it but the guy at the store told me that an os 70 4 stroke will not work with this plane. Is anyone here flying this plane with an OS 70? if you are what did you have to do to the plane to make it balance and does it fly ok?
Thank you in advanced.

The WM 40S (or for that matter the NP version) will both accept the OS 70 FS.
The only very minor problem is mounting the engine.
You can side mount it and use a Bison Pitts muffler w/o problems, or use an extension tube for the muffler. You really cannot side mount it and use the stock muffler setup without major damage to the cowl.
You can also inverted mount it, and let the stock muffer hang from the bottom of the cowl like most inverted FS mounts.
The plane balances just fine with the OS FS 70. as the weight (and power output for that matter) is very close to a 2 stroke .46.
I have several of these planes and I tend to prefer the 2 stroke .46'rs in them, such as an OS AX .46 or TH .46...
The FS is not quite as powerful as the 2 stroke .46. but much better than say an OS LA .46 in the same plane.
