In reality, one doesn't actually need "the best" trainer, many will work well. Thunder Tiger makes good products. If that is what is available locally, it is a good choice.

Like piper_chuck said, there isn't any single "best" trainer out there. The Thunder Tiger Tiger Trainer series has been around a long time. They are widely regarded as being high quality aircraft and well-suited for first time pilots. Thunder Tiger also makes excellent glow engines, so a Tiger Trainer with a .46 sized TT Pro engine will likely prove to be a top quality plane that you will enjoy flying for many years to come.
The Hangar 9 Arrow and Alpha trainers are also outstanding products. The Hangar 9 P51 PTS is a terrific product. The Hangar 9 Solo Sport, Solo Star, and Solo Strike ARFs are all nice trainer platforms. The Sig LT-40 Kadet and Kadet Senior are great airframes. Carl Goldberg Eagle, Protege, and Falcon trainers are really nice. The Hobbico Nexstar, Hobbystar, and Avistar are all great trainer platforms. The Great Planes PT 20/40/60 trainer kits are good choices if you want to kit build your first trainer. The Seagull Arising Star is a nice trainer. The Global Hobby RCM Trainer is a terrific airframe. Polk Hobbies has a trainer ARF called the Dorothy II that is supposed to have outstanding flight characteristics.
Any one of these airframes could be combined with an engine from SuperTigre, Thunder Tiger, O.S. Max, Tower Hobbies, GMS, Evolution, Saito, SK, Webra, MECOA, or Magnum and a radio system from Futaba, JR, Airtronics/Sanwa, Hitec, Spektrum, Polk Hobbies, Multiplex, or Ace Hobbies to make a great trainer aircraft. Hopefully I didn't miss too many brands in my list!

The TT trainer is fine. If you want to fly a glow trainer this year, any good Almost Ready to Fly trainer would suffice. If you prefer to build a balsa stick-and-former kit and fly next year, we can suggest several.
If I was in your position, I think I would fly that electric foamie until I could get it out of trouble every time, and order a nice balsa kit. There are small ones like the Sig LT-25, and large ones like the Telemaster (a fine plane to learn with!) and the more common .40 size trainer planes like the Eagle II, the LT-40 and the Great Planes trainers.
Your preference may be for an ARF trainer, and thats fine. Good luck,
Dave Olson

I agree with Chuck. The best Trainer is the old Ford vs Chevy type deal. Most of us vote for the one that got us our wings. I however will be objective & even though I used the NexStar & the Tower Trainers to learn on, I really like the Thunder Tiger Trainer. If it is the one I'm thinking of that comes with the ARF & a TT .42 engine for $159 then you choose your own radio & flight pack, I think that is a great deal!! I've heard nothing but praises about that engine & from the picture I think the ARF itself is a much nicer looking plane than my Tower or my NexStar. In fact I would go as far as to say imo it's the sharpest looking little Trainer of the bunch![sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif]
Any of them will get the job done. With your Foamie experience you will probably solo quite quickly. I guess it really just boils down to which one you like the best & how much money you want to spend on a Trainer. The TT W/Engine for $159 leaves room to buy a decent radio too. Which is something worth thinking about. Good luck, I know you will do well after already flying the Foamies.

If this is the bird you're looking at, I stand corrected. It is $150 for the ARF with the TT .42 Engine. What a great buy & a sharp looking little plane. If I had it to do all over again, this is the Trainer I would buy hands down, it's a no brainer for me!
